Nikon flash on M6 TTL?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Leica Photography : One Thread

Quick flash question: Will a Nikon Speedlight SB-22s TTL flash work with my M6 TTL? Do I need an additional cable? I borrowed the flash from a buddy at work for an event I'm shooting Friday night (Carnaval Brasilera here in Austin), so I really don't have time to experiment with this set-up. I'll probably shoot longer than the flash-sync speed of 1/50 to capture some of the ambient light in the background. Any advice for this type of shooting? (By the way, you can see some images of the type I'd like to make at http://www.sambaparty.com)

Oh, one more thing: When I mounted the flash on the hotshoe for the first time to try it out, the battery in the M6 pretty much died. The brightness of the meter LEDs did not dim (as it is described in the M6 manual) but now they just flicker for a split second then disappear. Is this the way batteries are supposed to die in an M6, or could it be symptomatic of a bigger problem?

Thanks, Luke

Luke,

I hope you haven't fried something in your M6. My understanding is that some non-Leica flashes use higher voltage and can damage circuits in Leica camera. I think the M6TTL and R8 both use the same type newer low voltage flash circuitry. Perhaps someone else has specific information but I would remove the flash, replace the batteries, and pray that the M6 functions properly. Then see about borrowing/renting a Leica SF20 or Metz flash with 3501/3503 adaptor. Good luck. LB

That should have said Metz flash with "3501 or 3502" adaptor. My fingers had a "senior moment". :-) LB

People -- PLEASE CHECK THE ARCHIVES BEFORE ASKING YOUR QUESTION!

Luke, this question, or a derivative of it, has been asked about every other week for about the last 3 months...

Jack...why do you care?

OK...Now I know. I guess I'll have to buy an SF20 tomorrow.

And by the way, the M6 does not appear to be fried. I replaced the batteries and the meter LEDs seem to be working fine.

Thanks to those of you who were kind enough to be patient and point me in the direction of some actual advice.

Luke

Jeff:

Actually you make a good point! I don't know why, but it just bugs me to see the same question(s) popping up on such a regular basis.

While the M6 does not "appear" to be fried, how can I tell if damage has been done to the camera? Will damage to the electronics be evident?

Thanks again, Luke
