SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Officials shut down 28 gates at San Francisco International Airport early Wednesday after security guards detected explosives residue on a man's shoes. The man disappeared into a crowd before guards could question him.

"When they went to stop him, he didn't stop," spokesman Mike McCarron said.

The passenger was described as a white male in his 40s.

Several thousand passengers were cleared from the United Airlines domestic terminal beginning around 7 a.m. as officer searched for the man, McCarron said. All outgoing flights from that part of the airport were held.

Radio just said he was wearing sandals. Also, residue "on" the shoes sounds like it was incidental. We all routinely wander through RDX explosives, don't we?

And people wonder why I don' want to fly anymore. I'm not so worried about getting blown up in an airplane as I am getting stranded for days at some airport. Gas is at $.99 cents at the name brand stations. If priced stay this low, I'm going to consider a driving vacation this spring break. May go down and take OG out to lunch. (;

I shudder to think of what kinds of residue my shoes have on them.

My car, on the other hand, or foot as it were, has dog doo on the tires cuz some obnoxious neighbor let their dog go in my yard and I drove on it. Oh man does it stink!!!!

Well, just don't park it in the living room...

Wonder what chicken poop does for explosives testers?

helen, I assume it asphyxiates them, which might be an appropriate first step.

Yep, they said the residue was the same as that on the Shoe Bomber's shoes. And because this guy got away with the shoes, we don't know if they were plugged with the stuff or not. I thought someone said there was a sort of panic button for security people to push which locks exit doors or something like that, and it wasn't pushed. Sheesh!

But if I understood correctly that he was wearing sandals, I can't imagine they would be containing much explosive.
