New to cameras, have a Elan II with sigma 28-105, came with camera. Looking to purchase a zoom for sports, football and baseball, some night games. Friend wants to sell me his 75-300 USM for cheap, I figure this will be suitible for daytime. But will this suffice for night games? Suggestions?

tthe 75-300 has an aperature of f5.6, this is sufficient for daytime games but for night games the f5.6 is too slow. Depending on how much $$$ you have to work with, I strongly recommend the canon 70-200mm F2.8 L lens (800-1000$ US) I believe.

The 70-200/2.8 is well over $1000 USA. It's a great lens--I own one. I've shot high school, college and professional football and baseball--sometimes at night. For night football, you should look at the Canon 200/2.8L prime lens. It's less than the 70-200/2.8 but it's still not cheap. I shot a lot of night football with a Nikon and 180/2.8 when I worked as a photographer. For baseball...well, that's a game that takes place over a huge area to cover with any single lens. A 300/2.8 was too short for a lot of night baseball. It's best to use a shorter lens and get as close to one of the bases as possible. Use flash if you can. Consider the 200/2.8L as the lowest priced good choice.

What is a "sprot lens"?

I suppose you'd need a sprot bag for your sprot lenses!
