If you don't need a flash for long telephot shots there's nothing like a good old Speedlite 155. It's good up to 40 feet and works perfectly with an AE-1. Ebay has a bunch of them

Or a 188A or 199A if you can spend a little more want a little more power

I just purchased a Canon 177A Speedlite on E-Bay. After the first test roll of flash pictures, I am extrmely pleased with the results. Good power, good dedicated operation, excellent subject coverage. It even has a diffuser panel to be placed over the flashtube for use with 28mm lens. I use it with my Canon A-1, but it can also be used with my AT-1 back-up body. I can recommed it.
