For my chickens. I assume larger than sand. Half the size of a BB airgun pellet?

I use coarse sand. They're now 4 mos. old and haven't had any problems.

I think it depends on the age of your chickens. I use creek gravel something along the size of BB's when starting mine and then allow free range. Know that the size of oyster shell is most times larger than this and the laying chickens seem to eat it.

I've used traction sand.

I like to use pigeon grit because it contain oyster and granite grit.My flock free ranges during the day so they can also get sand and pebbles as they desire.
