Creds to Posh

I think Peterbourgh and Barry Fry showed a great attitude yesterday. They try to kick their way through to next round and to see BF when they scored 2-2 running to the players with his arm up like Shearer, was fun.

Can you just imagine the felling for them when they had faught back to 2-2 and we got that penalty. I almost felt sad for them. Damn Im getting soft!

they played well, Fry's just a cartoon version of himself, although his positive attitude is great, and nice to see him still being able to laugh about it all when he was so close to a precious replay

Well fought, good spirited game all round. In HUGE contrast to the scowling that accompanied the Stevenage debacle. Bobby, Shearer et al said all the right things - ie no bullying or aloofness, but respect and recognition both before and after the game. And Peterborough responded admirably too, giving us a very tough game that they could and should be proud of, without trying to milk any anti-Premiership feeling. I hope they've won themselves some new fans in the process.

Peter has said it all - total agreement.

Even though I dislike Fry, and could have done without his 'running commentary', I thought he handled himself pretty well in the circumstances.

Btw, I like the look of their LB - more than I can say about ours!

The management and players of both sides kept a sufficient level of decorum, without sucking each other off. However, it was pleasing to hear the boos at Shearer whenever he touched the ball. Ignorant f**ks...

Barry Fry is a twat, but he made me laugh - the constant touchline commentary was unnecessary, though.

I object to the phrase "try to kick their way through". Peterborough played by far the better football and the only bad challenge of the game came from Elliot.

I think the ref made a mistake on the first penalty decision... I said at the time that he'd have given it at 0-0. He made amends later when he realised his mistake may have a dramatic effect on the result IMO

I thought we were pretty dreadful - particularly sloppy at the back, and Bernard seemed the only one interested in testing their keeper.

Said it before, and no doubt I'll have to say it again until YBR agrees with me (arrogant, me!), Elliot was total pants. He cost nowt, and as ever, you get what you pay for. No way would we have brought him back if he wasn't a)a geordie, b)free. He's a solid Nationwide player. Not keen on Quinn either, but his cross on Sunday was mint. I believe Bobby wasn't pleased with the way Olivier got skinned in the second half by their bloke, but I'd have him start before Elliot any day

Bernard's certainly got a tasty left foot shot on him. The ability to shoot accurately, with power, from outside the area is something we've been missing - I don't count Lee's recent efforts. With Bellamy on the follow up (Shearer too if he can shift the zimmer frame quick enough) it's a useful option if other approaches aren't working.

As usual, I raised some ire on the DailyToon bbs with my immediate post-match comments, but on reflection I still feel we were dreadful.

We had lerds of possible excuses that to our eternal credit we didn't use - but the bottom line is that we were embarrassingly lacking in quality against a 2nd Div team that is struggling to stay out of the relegation zone.

Yes, I know "this is the FA Cup", "they had nothing to lose" (whatever the hell that is supposed to mean), "Cardiff beat Leeds" and "Walsall beat Charlton", blah..blah..blah..blah - however, we are supposed to be PL contenders yet we showed no control or composure whatsoever, and several of our regulars looked inferior to their counterparts in blue & white.

I thought Given had an awful game - despite one terrific save at 2-2 that kept us in it - our defence was shaky all afternoon, simply being out-muscled on numerous cocasions. The passing from defence was hopeless, with Elliott in particular barely putting a single pass to one of his own team, and midfield was completely and utterly non- existent - the source of most of our problems. AS looked disinterested and had a poor game, leaving the tireless CB as by far our best player - keeping their defence on its toes throughout and taking a fair bit of physical punishment for his trouble.

The midfield situation simply beggars belief and someone should be bloody shot for allowing us to get into a situation that has been predicted ad nauseum on here and in the pubs and clubs all over Tyneside for months - reasonable to say that it is hardly rocket science therefore - while our two Senior Directors fanny aboutin foreign parts: one on a Far East jaunt at a critical time of the season, the other trying to wheel & deal his way into a bankrupt Spanish 2nd Div Club rather than focussing his de minimus brainpower on a Club that is sitting 3rd in the PL with inadequate playing resources, no training facilities and still unable to predict when it's long- awaited Youth Academy will be operational - not to mention his father's other company that is £40m in debt and close to bankruptcy.

These two particular comedians are badly in need of a new scriptwriter imho!

Geordie: I ment to write they DIDN'T kick their way....

Clarky, bit harsh on FF. He's trying to set us up to flog more stuff into what is a potentially huge market, as per Manure. I can't see he could do much here that YBR isn't, other than giving him some cash to buy a midfielder and a left back. On the other hand, young Hall is definately gaga. Expect to see Cameron Hall in the insolvency courts very very soon, with FF in like Flint to buy the NUFC shares from Dougies bankers at two thirds of naf all.

Agree about credit to Peterborough. After their equalizer and the way we were playing at that point, I was convinced they'd get a third and go through. I didn't see how we were going to pull it back unless we calmed down and regained some semblance of control. I never heard the running commentary, maybe it wasn't on the feed overseas? I couldn't help nearly falling off my chair in hysterics when Fry took off down the touchline, though. That's the funniest thing I've ever seen at a match!

I'm glad we got through, but I wouldn't have begrudged them a replay or win based on their efforts yesterday.

Anyone know why they're called posh? as far as i've ever seen the place is a shithole....

-- Anonymous, January 28, 2002

You're probably right Terry - it's just that I'm thoroughly brassed over this midfield situation. However, FS is working on the Club's interests and doesn't deserve to be lumped together with that other cretin.

This is the second season running we've made the same stupid bloody mistakes, and it is just so utterly unprofessional - if we've got no bread right now then get someone in on loan ffs!!!

-- Anonymous, January 28, 2002

I think you're being a bit harsh on the lads Clarky. 3 of our first choice midfield out, pudding of a pitch, dodgy floodlights etc etc etc I for one didn't see any lack of effort out there yesterday. Also, if you actually count the efforts ON TARGET we really should've buried them. Not taking anything away from them mind, great game, great atmposphere. Bring on KK's entertainers mk2.

Ok, even though I suspect Gav was taking the P!ss here is the appently most widely accepted rean why Peterborough are called The Posh. Way back when they were first formed they were know as Peterborough and Fletton Utd and carried the nickname of the brickies. Then in 1921 the then manager Pat Tirrel said that in the close season he was looking for posh players to sign for a posh team. Hence the nickname the Posh. However while they were still known as Peterborough and Fletton Utd they still kept the brickies nickname until the club folded in 1932 leaving debts of 248 pounds, 1 shilling and 11d. The new rejuvenated Peterborough Utd, kept the name "The Posh".

Oh......so who are The Posh that are on their shirts? have some firm taken the name up or in the absence of any sponsors do they just put the club name on the shirt?

-- Anonymous, January 28, 2002

Double glazing I think

-- Anonymous, January 28, 2002

Dave - I haven't criticised the effort, and the pitch and the lights were the same for both teams. In any event the pitch was only marginally worse than our own. Effort, for a top6 PL team, should be neither discretionary or praiseworthy - although the lack of it would undoubtedly have cost us this game last season.

I was commenting on the overall lack of quality and the fact that several of Peterboro's players adapted to the conditions better than ours did. Defensively we were poor, and midfield was non-existent.

Yes we had a couple of injuries - all teams get them - but if our squad players aren't good enough to come in and do a job against Div 2 opposition then what use are they? Why are our management not able to recognise that this blindingly obvious situation needs to be addressed before the entire season goes completely t*ts up?

I think we should try and sign De La Pena on loan. Yes is salary is a reported 80 k a week - 320 k a month. But when you think what we have got from Marcelino over the last 32 weeks, he looks an absolute bargain.
