Will the REAL Yankee please stand up?greenspun.com : LUSENET : Country Families : One Thread |
A Canadian once said to me, "You're awfully friendly for an American." I laughed, and took it for the compliment it was meant to be. I don't know what made me think of it just now, since that was almost two years ago, but it reminds me of something I read long ago in, I think, Reader's Digest. It went something like this:To an Englishman, a Yankee is anyone from the United States.
To those from the United States, a Yankee is anyone born north of the Mason-Dixon line.
To those born north of the Mason-Dixon line, a Yankee is anyone from New England.
To New Englanders, a Yankee is someone from Vermont.
To citizens from Vermont, a Yankee is anyone who still uses an outhouse.

My Dad, a true Texan, used to say, it's okay to marry a Yankee, as long as you can "convert" him.lol (I knew my California born husband was a real Texan when I heard him use the Alamo in a sacrament meeting talk.:)
