Explosion With at Least a Dozen Injuries Reported at Scrap Metal Factory in Willingboro, N.J.

WILLINGBORO, N.J. (AP) - An explosion tore through a scrap metals factory Friday, injuring at least a dozen people.

Scott Share, a spokesman for Rancocas Hospital in Willingboro, said the hospital had been told to expect at least 10 patients. He said they had suffered burns, but had no further details.

Several other patients were being transported to Cooper Hospital-University Medical Center in Camden, the closest trauma center, Share said.

The explosion happened at about 9:30 a.m. at Hi-Temp Specialty Metals Inc. WPVI-TV in Philadelphia reported that it was in an acid bath area at the factory.

Firefighters, at least eight ambulances and a medical evacuation helicopter rushed to the scene, according to broadcast reports.

Television photos showed damage to the roof and exterior of the one-story building, but there were no flames visible. Firefighters were working on the roof.

The plant is located in an industrial section of the Burlington County community, about 10 miles northeast of downtown Philadelphia.
