Lolo speaks

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Unofficial Newcastle United Football Club BBS : One Thread

This isn't the most interesting of his little interviews and I've asterixed a bit I'm not how to interpret....

1. You were at the Montpellier-Auxerre match which ended 0-0. You can't really say that this was a good result for Montpellier.

It's clear that they didn't have any luck. They tried hard and harried Auxerre but couldn't really break them down. They were some exciting moments but when luck's not with you...there was always a defender waiting to clear off the line. In any event, over the full match, Montpellier deserved to win.

2. What did you think of Auxerre?

As usual, away from home, they were very defensive with ten men behind the ball most of the time and Cisse alone up front. That's why they didn't make for a good game and why Cisse didn't do much.

3. Returning to the Premiership, Arsenal beat Leicester 3-1, putting them in second place. Now, only three points separating the top 5. It's a mad Championship..

It's completely crazy. For us, now that people are looking out for us, we have to take care. We have to grind out results so as not to get separated from the pack. Playing in this sort of Championship is very exciting. No one expected Newcastle to do this well and that we have proves what a good squad we have.

4. What do you think the rest of the season will bring?

It will be very difficult. All the games are big games and when you have to play Arsenal at home and Liverpool away, you can't drop points. We lost two points at Leicester last weekend and to stay in the chase, we musn't make the slightest mistake.

5. Who do you think will win the PL?

I don't know. No one wants to give anything away, least of all us. *For me, since I'm here, I want to play in the CL next season. The end of the season should be very exciting.

6. Aren't you late for training?

No, I was getting changed while talking to you.. Bye.

*Moi, si je suis là, c’est pour jouer l’année prochaine la Ligue des Champions. He says this and I interpret it as him saying that he is here to play in the CL next season. However, I guess this could mean, "If, I'm here..."

PS. I personally think he means that he's here to play CL football next season... However, expect headlines saying "Toon star throws doubt over his future on Tyneside".

-- Anonymous, January 25, 2002

Hmm. I see what you mean. If I wasn't desperate to find another interpretation it clearly says 'if i'm there'.

-- Anonymous, January 25, 2002

Pete, just re-reading this, I think the tense gives it away: the French stick much more closely to correct tenses than the English and I think he is saying "If I'm here, it's because I want to play in the Cl next season" rather than "If I will be here".

I'll buy that Dougal. I think you're right - the reason I'm here now, is to play in the CL next season. Panic over.

;0)

cheers dougal, always appreciated.

It's good they realize that draws now are points lost. Hopefully it'll keep them from getting lazy in the rest of our matches. Realizing the CL is theirs to lose makes a good incentive. :-)

That Asterisked

Have a shufty at my website to see what Asterixedis.

It's being beaten up by a short, dumpy Gaul who drinks Strength Potion, isn't it?

-- Anonymous, January 25, 2002

Not always, as clearly demonstrated in Astreix & the Britons (I think that's the title, or '...in Britain') when the battling Britons (and Asterix) drink tea instead.

-- Anonymous, January 25, 2002

The die is cast.

-- Anonymous, January 25, 2002

Ah, Asterix..not in the same league as Tintin IMHO, but nonetheless pure class. Particularly liked Asterix and the Romans myself.

Can anyone remember what his little dog was called (Asterix's dog, I mean?).

-- Anonymous, January 25, 2002

Can't get through to your web page, Shags.

-- Anonymous, January 25, 2002

>>The die is cast. ??

-- Anonymous, January 25, 2002

Not even tea, I seem to remember Bobby. Wasn't it just tepid water with milk, because tea hadn't been 'discovered' yet :-)

-- Anonymous, January 25, 2002

LOL, that's right. Water with "just a spot of milk"

-- Anonymous, January 25, 2002

Dogmatix.

-- Anonymous, January 25, 2002

I quite liked the chiefs name....vitalstatistix....the owld pie eating so and so....

-- Anonymous, January 25, 2002

I fought with Vercingetorix...

-- Anonymous, January 25, 2002

...sorry, milk's off.

Tea leaves were brought into England by Asterix when Getafix the druid gave him some on his journey (crowbar plot device, but there you go) and were used as a substitute magic potion when the original French supply was lost due to striking French dock workers a Roman attack.

This anorak is itchy...

Works for me, Bob.

Asterix v. Tintin: no comparison though there does seem be a gender divide on that one, from previous conversations I've had.

Yep - yep "the die is cast" as said by J. Caesar during the civil wars v. pompey and Crassus but in Asterix said by Roman soldiers who've just been tw@tted.

Vistalstatistix rules the village but his wife Impedimenta (to misquote I Claudius) rules Vitalstatistix.

And Roman Agent is the best one, yes. Tea is introduced into Briton at the end of that book, after the Britons are duped into believing it's real magic potion. The dog's called Dogmatix, or in the French Idefix which is sort of the same idea.

Format bollox.

It's of course Asterix in Britain that the hot water with a spot of milk, the warm beer, the iced red wine and the boiled boar with mint sauce. Roman Agent is the best one, though.

How come the "Answers page" reckons there are 22 updates to this posting? Who's nicked the rest??

-- Anonymous, January 25, 2002

Must be at least 24 now. STAND STILL when I'm counting you.

-- Anonymous, January 25, 2002

If memory serves, Asterix the Legionnaire was my favourite. Have to disagree about Tintin though, I think Asterix is far superior.

-- Anonymous, January 25, 2002

Dougal - Alea jacta est = the die is cast. Yr Latin not as good as your French, then.

-- Anonymous, January 26, 2002

Yes indeed, J Caesar said "alea jacta est" not "the die is cast". I should know, being around at the time. Now if only I could remember exactly which river the blasted Rubicon was...

Pallium meium carpam!

-- Anonymous, January 26, 2002

I thought that Softie was referring to Lolo's interview and was saying something insightful about whether he is leaving us. Only did A Level Latin so, no, it isn't very good.

-- Anonymous, January 26, 2002

Talking of the Lolo interview, no one on his site or on the PSG sites has picked up (as yet) on the "si je suis la" thing. Bearing in mind that they seem desperate for his return etc, if the interpretation was "If I will be there", you'd have expected them to have commented on it...

-- Anonymous, January 26, 2002

No only about it, one better than me. So you know I got an incorrect extra "i" in the last line - must write out "Romani ite domum" a thousand times on these walls by dawn...

-- Anonymous, January 26, 2002

Of course Dan I must remind you - taking advantage of the current retro-70s fad - that The Romans, who lived in Latium, wrote and spoke Latin.

Apologies to everyone else, who no doubt get well peed off by "in" comments, for posting an "in" comment.

-- Anonymous, January 26, 2002

Sorry, it's just that I took the time to look it up in a Latin/English dictionary when I was 11 and knew there must be some reason why I still remembered it.
