AVI file with sound in "Windows Media Audio V2" format

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Video CD : One Thread

I have some number of AVI files. Most of them have sound in MP3 format, and there is no problem to watch them. But a couple of them have sound in Windows Media Audio V2 format, and there is no sound, even latest Windows Media Player plays without sound. I found just one movie editor that can play sound, it is not good for watching movie. So, question is how to play these movies with sound, or how to convert sound to MP3 format?

Thanks.

My question as well! I haven't found a codec that seems to do the trick yet...

-- Dawid Rojek-Szumanski (toxero@telia.com), February 21, 2002.

Try this link, it may help: http://www.divx-digest.com/software/acemega_codec.html

-- Mr Fett (mrfett@optushome.com.au), February 23, 2002.

I had the same problem: AVI playback but no sound. I have found the solution!

Download this codec pack: http://www.divx-digest.com/software/nimo_pack.html

Then install it selecting only the Audio Codecs. Now playback is fine, but to prevent this from happening again I have reencoded my video files to MP3 using Virtualdub.

Hope it helped!

I had exactly the same problem, took your advice and installed the audio codecs above - and tada the video works! Thanx for contributing such useful information!!!

For some reason I get a message from the Nimo bundle that the installation fails, and from the Ace bundle that it may destablize my system. I'm running XP, so that is likely the prolem. Any of you guys that had success run XP? And what is the solution?

-- Jason Riggs (jriggs45@hotmail.com), March 09, 2002.

Hmm I am running XP and had no troubles. Nimo did say that several files failed to open, but i just clicked ignore and the install finished succesfully. Are you running XP PRO or HOme?

Divx_Pioneer I got the same problem as you, I can download the nimo pack but when i try to install i get this:

>> NSIS ERROR

Installer verification failed

This could be the result of and incomplete download, a failing disk, or (possibly) corruption from a virus

You can try to force an install using the /NCRC command line(but is NOT recommended) >>

any help is welcome. I run winXP Pro. Looked everywhere for a possible other codex, but couldn't find.

Dudes you cannot go around installing hacked codecs and expect Microsoft to support updates on those codecs. At least, I am not. I have the same problem with the Windows Media Audio codec V2, but I am not going to put a hacked codec in place of an official one. What I think we need is a utility to convert the audio codec in the AVI from this bad choice Windows Media Audio codec V2 to a good choice.

Anyone find anything like that?

You know, I have this exact problem. Except, mine was originally an ASF file. SO then, I used ASFTOols to convert it to an AVI. However, it still had the sound problem. I have Nimo, Divx 5.01, Windows Media AUdio V1 and V2, but none of it works. COuld somebody tell me the proper decompressor or tell me a better ASF to AVI convertor?

First of all I'd like to thank Rybber for the nimo codec pack. Now I have a few avi movies that VirtualDub says it does not know the Audio stream compresson and returns 'Unknown(tag 2000)' I have only installed the nimo codec pack and still no sound. I'm running Windows2000 pro. Please post any suggestions you may have for this problem of mine. My thanks in advance. I will continue to search and will post the solution if I have one.

this is in responce to all those who couldnt find the codec within minuites. Esp those more recently.

LEARN HOW TO USE SEARCH ENGINES.

God damn, i found the link to the nimo site by typing in

> 'windows media audio v2' codec

its not hard, this site also happened to be one of the sites that appeared in the list on the first page. Learn to search effectively on the web and you wont spend hours looking for shit.

for those who dont know how to find search engines, being the reason why you dont use them efficiently here are a few. Mind you everyone should already know these all.

www.yahoo.com www.altavista.com www.google.com (also yahoo, but who cares.) www.astalavista.com (not so legal stuff) www.warezcrawler.org (even more not legal stuff, also contains norp banners)

simple. Learn, ask questions, but if you do nothing in your life dont be a waste of my bandwidth on the net, i need it a lot more than you do cause i'm not chasing my tail looking for a codec that i'm already downloading after 5 mins of looking.

Response to AVI file with sound in “Windows Media Audio V2” format

I want to know, what codec this is looking for. I realize that this problem can be fixed with these codec packs, but what codec was used to encode these files (in virtualdub it says tag 0161).

What codec uses tag 161? Needless to say I'd like to punch the people in the balls that encode audio in their avi's with anything other than mp3. (Yeah, I noticed those hosed Kenshin episodes too.)

I've downloaded the divx4 codec just to see if it was divx wma audio, but the divx4 codec wasn't it either. GROWL.

If anyone can tell me what codec tag 161 is, please email me at anon1978@hotmail.com (I've searched the web for hours to no avail. I'd like to know how the hell you found the codec for this mysterious codec, Nimo.)

Thanks!

The codec you're all looking for is

Divx ;-) Audio Compressor Version 4.02

It's in the Tsunami codec pack under Divx Audio Codec and/or Windows Media Audio 7.00.00.1956 the divx and wma codecs appear under audio codec properties with different names but are actually the same.

If somebody knows a setup program that solely installs this codec only, please let me know!

Response to AVI file with sound in “Windows Media Audio V2” format

Apparently, the later versions of divx do not support wma, only mp3 sound. So if you install divx 3.11, your sound will play. You don't have to uninstall your version, just make sure not to replace files that are more up to date when installing 3.11. I'm sure there are more sophisticated ways to make the sound play, but this is the fastest method I know.

The audio codec we're probably all talking about right now works fine with the latest divx (5.0.2). Make sure this is enabled in the View-> Options, Format tab of Windows Media Player 6.4. In my case it shows itself as the Default DirectSound Device in Properties, Advanced tab. By the way, use w2k sp3 instead of XP. I don't know exactly what Microsoft is trying to prove but they're not making it easier for us.

Response to AVI file with sound in “Windows Media Audio V2” format

Problem1: Tried everything (Nimo, Tsunami with all the installations relevant to audio enabled). Still the audio didn't work.

Solution1: I had DivX ;) Audio installed, yet was wondering why it didn't work. I played with the audio codec settings a bit, and found out that although installed, this codec was NOT enabled by default. Using XP Pro may have caused this, since the driver was not WinXP-certified. After enabling it, the audio worked fine.

Problem2: These two codec packs remove the files they installed (and overwrite), so unless you have separate codecs installers, you'll be stuck with these packs and what they provide. (Can't uninstall, else you lose your other codecs that they've overwritten too)

Solution2: Install codecs individually as you need them. Most of the problems here are related with DivX ;) Audio Compressor 4.02 audio codec, which you can find separately here: http://www.divx-digest.tv/software/codec/divx_audio_402.zip

Nice one Colin ;) The Nimo Pack make my WMP crash, and the Tsunami made my WMP unable to "seek" an intermediate position in the video (it always restarted the video from the beginning). That's the "quite" definitive solution. I said "quite" 'cos when I "jump" in the middle of a film I get the right video, but the audio starts again from the beginning... :\ Anyway that's enough for seeing some Divx-es :)

TNX a lot

Response to AVI file with sound in “Windows Media Audio V2” format

I think it really sucks that u cant trust half the things u read on the internet. I have this problem too, same as all of you did/have and i want to find the best solution to solve the problem. Im not going to install anything just yet because i paid a alot of money for this machine and i actually care if i corrupt it unlike some of you who just jumped in at the first answer u saw. I took everyones answers and opinions in here and also the websites of the posters and i will research every single last detail including spyware, decoders, decompressors, viruses and the exact codec (s) responsible. I will try the safest options first with nimo being the last resort. I do believe it probably works but I do also believe its packed with cydoor/spyware and god knows what else. If a file converter doesnt work then ill go download nimo at an internet cafe and if it works there ill download it here. Right now first priority would be to find out what kind of nasty things nimo attaches to its files...because im not going to risk a 2000.00 machine for the sake of a $20.00 video. I was wondering also if thoses of you who downloaded nimo UNSUCESSFULLY are behind a firewall or/and have ad- aware or simular programs installed. I have no idea if this would make a difference or not, im very new to the internet, im just curious.Id like to know what does what and why.

Response to AVI file with sound in “Windows Media Audio V2” format

I went the tsunami route. and yes, there's some kind of adware in there. But it's not sophisticated - the free version of Zonealarm caught it trying to phone home. If you havn't got a firewall yet, just do a web search for "zonealarm". Tsunami is cool cos you get to select which codecs to install, and several offered were older than what I had with Win 2000 Pro / WMP7.

BTW to check installed codecs and versions under W2000 you go: Settings -> Control Panel -> Admin Tasks -> Computer Management -> System Info -> Components -> Audio (or Video) Codecs. Hope this helps someone, somewhere.

Response to AVI file with sound in “Windows Media Audio V2” format

I finally found the solution for Windows Media Audio V2. My post is long but is worthy. You don't need to install Nimo and other software which force you to use their spyware! You have to replace a file named msaud32.acm in your windows\system\ folder with the following file. Although it may be the same version as your file (7.00.00.1954) the file is hacked and works for AVI. Copy everything below this line to an empty TXT file opened in WordPad (not in Notepad). Then save the file (as a text file) and rename it WMA.UUE, then open it with WinZip and extract the file. No restart is needed for the change to work. You can keep your original file renaming it, if you want to be able to restore the system later (although you won't want).

Note: The file can not fit on this server but my full post is currently available at http://www.moviecodec.com/mb/topic287.shtml

After I downloaded nimo my windvd player no longer works. Had to reboot my whole system since this stupid HP doesn't come with back up discs to re-install windvd. Anyone know how to solve this so I can have my windvd and V2 files to work?

I found just reinstalling the original DivX 3.11alpha codec fixed the no sound problem with the WMAudio V2. This codec is sometimes missing from later releases. Get it here:

http://www.divx-digest.com/software/divxcodec.html

You may also find the codec within your DivX AC3 file.

Go to: http://www.divx-digest.com/software/divxcodec.html and install "divx audio compressor" (unzip it, right-click the .inf file and choose Install).

That's all, nothing else's needed.

The divx audio compressor is the one that works, and does not cause any harm to your system. Do not install nimo unless as a last resort, as nimo has been known to crash many systems

Agreed. The divx audio compressor works and it's a smaller download

I have a question. I had this problem about a year ago and downloaded the codec and my sound was fixed. But now i have recently switched over to using a mac and im having the same problem all over. Is there a website for the codec for quicktime or will i have to download a version of windows media player as well?
