Aloysius Paulus Maria van Gaal to Old Trafford?

If this is more than a rumour it is fantastic news. Not least it would stop me having recurring nightmares of him taking over after Robson.

The man is insufferable, arrogant, swaggering egotist, a PR disaster-zone, utterly convinced of his own genius. His period as Dutch coach was an unmitigated failure. His final press conference will long be remembered for his total lack of grace, self-control, humour, tact, honesty, sensitivity and good manners.

He lashed out at the media, he criticised the players, he literally shouted himself hoarse blaming anyone and everyone but himself for his failure to qualify for the World Cup. Any suggestions that his tactics –JFH as right-winger, high-balls against Ireland? - and his heavy-handed approach to his players, who were glad to see the back of him, were responsible dismissed out of hand as sniping by ignoramuses.

His time at Barcelona was characterized by declaring the entire club needed reorganizing, buying almost an entire team of Dutch players, and slagging off the media. Despite winning two championships they were glad to see the back of him: ”Ladies and Gentlemen of the press I'm going - congratulations!” The man’s a jerk, and they’d be welcome to him.

If he does badly at Manure he'll be off within 6 months though.

The question is, does it take longer than 6 months to destroy a team?

Much can be done in six months...a sweet dreams!

I don't know. I don't rate him much as a manager but you've got to admire someone who could wind up the Catalans and the press the way he did here. Full marks for style. The man truly does not give a f***.

I used to look forward to his press conferences. He would start off relatively calm, in garbled, near-incomprehensible Spanish, then go absolutely off on one seemingly at random.

Great entertainment...

Fair play to him though, he built a terrific side at Ajax, loads of great young players (the ones he proceeded to collect at Barca!)
