Elan 7e where are they made?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Canon EOS FAQ forum : One Thread

My daughter just purchased an Elan 7e. We noticed it and her 28-105 lens is made in Taiwan, others I have seen are made in Japan, as is my Elan 2e and my 28-105 lens. It was purchased from Abe's as a USA warantied body, grey market lens. Should we care? Any light you can shed on this would be appreciated.

Thank you, Tom

You probably shouldn't care.

As far as I know all Canon's "pro" lenses are assembled in Japan and the same probably holds for the EOS-1v and 1D. The consumer and so-called "prosumer" items may be made and/or assembled outside Japan, but to Canon's quality control rules. There's no truth in the sales pitch often given by sleazy camera stores that advertise a lens at a low price, then tell you it was made in Taiwan and you can purchase "the much better lens made in Japan" for only another $100.

There are two versions of the EF 28-105 Canon zoom lens. The mkI and the mkII; the new lens with the 7E is more than likely a mkII. The newer model is supposed to be a little more rugged than the older model, and it will have a 7 blade aperture. Your mkI will have 5 or 7 (they switched this a few years ago). I digress...

I owned the mkII version for roughly one year before going the prime lens route and was very pleased with the build quality and performance (mine was made in Taiwan as well).

So, do not worry, it should be fine. Canon, more than likely, has the same quality standards in either location.

I bought an Elan 7E last March and an Elan 7 for my wife in August and both cameras were made in Japan. I've heard the new EF 28-105 USM MK II is made in Canon's Taiwan factory along with the Rebels, kit lenses and point 'n shoots. I haven't heard any complains about quality and the cheaper labor keeps the gear affordable.

I've read postings that some EF 28-105 USM MK IIs are Japan made and some are Taiwanese, but this is probably an internet myth or they're confusing the MK II with the MK I.

As stated, why care? We live in a global economy. I have some older Leitz binoculars made in Portugal and some of the parts on my Dodge truck was made in Canada and Mexico. It's results that matter and I bet there would be no discernable difference between the photos made with the two cameras and lenses.

I got my Elan 7 today through mail[internet]order, and it is made in Japan.

I too found out that my EOS 30/Elan 7E was made in Taiwan. I was expecting it to be made in Japan and it does worry me a bit. But as long as they meet strict quality control standards when they were manufactured, then the camera should be fine.
