Three day old goat bloody stool

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Dairygoats : One Thread

I have a three day old goat given to me by a local farmer who couldnt get her to eat, although she did get moms milk for a short time after birth then got kicked out by the other two kids, one of three kids i guess, she had a bloody thick yellow stool and cried while doing so, I only got one 8oz bottle of starter in her and she fed on my dog for about 2min x2. I need help. No vet close by anything here at home that will help? She just does not want the bottle. I thank you all in advance for any help.

Susan, Actually 8 oz down a 3 day old is very good. Sometimes it helps to hold them and massage them and if you tickle under their tail when trying to feed, it stimulates the sucking reflex. Can you get any goat milk amywhere? If not you might try to get 3-5 oz down her every 4 hours or so until she nurses better. Don't give up, it sometimes takes awhile for the babies to catch on. Just keep offering it to her and tickle under the tail. the yellow stool is normal stool for a baby goat the bloody part, well maybe Vicki can answer that better than me. The pritchards teat is my favorite nipple to use when feeding new babies, it is red and screws on a pop bottle. Once you get her eating I would treat for coccidiosis and worm her right away too. Go to goatworld.com and use their 911 emergency help area and see what they advise too.

Thanks for the help, she wont stand now, although I am getting 3-5oz goats milk into her, is she just too weak? Do they sometimes bounce back? I sure hope so. There hasnt been any new blood, and the stools are gettting more formed.

I called a vet and will take the little one in the AM . I have fed the kid several times now and she FINALLY is standing on her own. But, having trouble passing stool and urine now, anything I can do here untill I get her to the vet? Any help will be great help at this point and I dont know if I have it in me to be a (goater). I give all of you the utmost credit . I am so glad there are people out there like all of you. I think I, as a nurse got into the wrong profession (sp). THANK YOU ALL.
