Spirit of the Times: 1800s San Francisco Theatre Paper

greenspun.com : LUSENET : San Francisco History : One Thread

Anyone have an idea of how I might pick some info out of a publication that was called The Spirit of the Times, apparently a theatre publication out of San Francisco circa 1857 - 1893? I'm on the east coast, so I can't go to any local spots, but can do e-mail/mail research. Thx!

Hi Linda,

2 books for you.

Under the adress: http://www.zpub.com/sf50/sf/hgnew.htm you will find a list of more than 100 "san-franciscanian" newspapers 1846-1934. One of it is - Spirit of the Times, weekly - 1857... ? -.

The bibliography at the end of the site contains: Kemble, Edward C. A History of California Newspapers. Reprint of Supplement to the Sacramento Union of December 25, 1858. Re-published and edited by Helen Harding Bretnor. 1962: Los Gatos, California.

Under the adress: http://www.nyu.edu/pages/projects/jhistory/jhist.96/0900.html you will find in a newsgroup a list of books about "Frontier journalism" by a certain David Sloan. One of these books is: Weigle, Clifford F. "San Francisco Journalism, 1847-1851." JQ 14 (1937): 151-57.

Perhaps you can find more on this way. Good luck !

PS: To avoid possible "irritations": There were at least two other "Spirits of the Times": The first one in Connecticut.from 1831 to 1861 (http://www.lib.cwu.edu/documents/papers-title.pdf). And the second one in New York "Spirit of the Times: A Chronicle of the Turf, Agriculture, Field Sports, Literature and The Stage." (New York City) weekly, 1831.... I don't have an answer..I have another question on the paper. I must have the New York issues, mine deal with Race Horses, Sail Boats, Trotters, Dogs, and horses in general. I speak of the cover ( front page)..I have others that have cartoon front covers dealing with fox hunts etc. My question: one, does anyone have issues dealing with dogs? and second, where can I find info on what I have ? I have 75 plus issues all in pristine condition.
