Flash Defuser for ML-3 Ringlite

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Canon EOS FAQ forum : One Thread

I have recently gotten an ML-3 Ringlite as a less expensive way to ease into the use of that kind of lighting with macro shots. I'm wondering if anyone is aware of a flash defuser made for that unit (possibly by a third-party manufacturer) or some suggestions on something "homemade" that's too hokey. Thanks.

Let's make that....."or some suggestions on something "homemade" that's *NOT* too hokey".

Flash defuser? Is it going to explode or something? :)

Anyway. I've never seen a flash diffuser sold for a ringlite flash. Do you need one? I thought the point of a ringlite is for macro photography anyway, in which the small relative size of the flash still results in reasonable light quality.

For direct flash I've found that removeable tape over the flash window (Scotch Magic or similar) works well to soften flash. If the effect isn't strong enough, try thin tissue paper or vellum or translucent mylar. The latter stuff will tend to cut down on the light output as a function of the diffusion.

Warning - the flashtube can kick out quite a bit of heat so check to see that the material doesn't get too hot.

Cheers,

Thanks Duane. I appreciate your comments and suggestions. In the past I saw a ring light with a regular slip-on diffuser panel...I thought it was for the Nikon unit but may have been one of the third- parties like Sunpak.
