How often should a wind up watch be wound?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

I got a good deal on a wind up Bulova rairoad watch today at the flea market and wanted to know the best way to wind it. Once a day or multiple, or does it matter? Does winding technique affect the accuracy?

Once a day.

winding more than once a day greatly increases the chances of overwinding, which freezes it up. once a day just until you meet resistance - do not force it.

Thank you. I wasn't sure as I have always used battery powered time pieces.

I'm just glad I am not as bad off as the teenager next door. She didn't know what direction clockwise was because she only knows digital.

Yep - once a day. Take it off in the evening as you go to bed (wrist- watch or fob-watch - doesn't matter), wind it and put it on the dresser. That way you don't forget. Many watches are capable of going two days between winding, but doing it daily means you don't get caught out if you forget once.

Winding once a day at a set time will assure that it gets wound, and hopefully prevent overwinding (gee did I wind this thing yet today??).
