Funny story (well,made me smile)

Story in this month's WSC in which this bloke decides to go to an early round FA Cup game at York City. He is feeling nostalgic and thinking "Wonderful, wintry day, lower league football and the traditional cup of tea and meat pie". Arriving at the ground, he is third in line when the kiosk opens. The first bloke says, "Two pies, please" and gets them. The second bloke asks for a pie, too and is told, "Sorry, love, we've sold out".

They don't get that sort of entertainment at Old Trafford.

But you can enjoy this sort of thing at SJP. At the Palace 3rd round Cup game, Gibbo and I were situated in the palatial luxury of the Sports Bar (I think it's called) in the Milburn.

At Half Time I was surprised to find food queues in the Bar which looked likely to come to an end before the conclusion of extra time and penalties (unlike my usual perch in The Gallowgate where I assume people are queued up to get a pie for the next home match). Mouth watering, I joined the queue and, sure enough, with still more than 5 minutes of the half time break to come I reached the front of the queue. "Mince Pie please" I said eagerly only to be informed they were sold out. "Never mind I'll have a hot dog" I said. "They've sold out as well" I was cheerfully informed, "We've got some crisps".

I made my excuses and left.

We will never get to the top of that pie league we saw published last year while this lack of vision is displayed by the club....

If the pie was anything like the one I purchased at Sid James' at the Chelsea match, then I can assure you that you have had a lucky escape. The chips however in the Milburn stand were outstanding.

The pies are, more often than not, nuclear hot. Talking to a connoisseur of fine pies, at the hot pie face contorting assembly, he advised to ask for pies from the bottom when you cannot wait for the necessary mince half life. Being a gent I don't usually ask for bottom until I now their star sign, but there you go.
