YKD

I know it gets a bit boring talking about Dyer and will he stay/go? The truth is I'm a bit absorbed by it - especially since he's one of the best players seen at SJP for a while.

I couldn't help noticing amongst his quotes about how much he loves the Toon and how he wants to stay with us, he also says 'we'll talk about contracts in the summer' I bet he bloody will!!!!! After his world cup appearances hae caught the eye of every Spanish and Italian team in the world! Am I being cynical? I guess he could say well pay me £100 thou a week or I'm off to REal Madrid.

Freddy S has had peliminary contract talks and I bet he wants to sign him up now before his value soars even more. If YKD had any real committment to us, he'd sort his contract out now. I suppose he's only keeping his options open but it's bloody annoying.

Lynda - if you were Kieron Dyer what would you do in this situation? Precisely! Nuff said.

This is almost out of our hands, now.... At least if he goes after the World Cup, we'll get a maximum of cash...

Dyer said: "Something exciting is happening at Newcastle United and I want to be a part of that. "We're going places with a young team and we want to make more people sit up and take notice of us. "Being at the top of the league is one of the best feelings I've ever had in football and to be looking down at sides who are supposedly better than Newcastle is a buzz. "I expected there to be a bit of transfer speculation once I proved my fitness but all I'm thinking about is to get Newcastle into the Champions League and to go to the World Cup in the summer." Dyer also promised the England coach that there is room for improvement in his game yet. "I know that Mr Eriksson was watching me on Saturday and hopefully he will have liked what he saw," he said. "I haven't spoken to him directly, although he talks to the gaffer a fair bit, but there is a lot more to come from me before the summer."

Sounds good enough to me. But as Dougal said, if Dyer decides to leave we will get the money he is worth. Persoally, I think that if we do well this year and challenge the title, he'll stay. He looks very settled at Newcastle. And I think he realises that we are the team of the future.

He also said Leeds aren't very good, especially now with all the injuries. So I reckon he's not planning on going there any time soon. ;-)

In June though he only has 12 months of his contract left. Doesn't this mean he can then decide not to sign a new one and be able to speak to other clubs or whatever. We don't want to be in a position where he leaves on a free transfer!

I read somewhere just recently that he has two seaons left on his contract after this one. I had previously believed he only had one season left after this one.

Clarky, this is actually a really good point: the consensus seems to be that his contract runs out in 2003 but recently, there have been references to 2004...

A player can sign a pre-contract with another club from 1 January in the year his contract ends. He can only do this, however, if the club is in another country. So a player can wait until the last season of his contract then has soon as Big Ben chimes he can sign a pre-contract with Real Madrid but he can't do so with Manchester United. Strange but true!

Sol Campbell had to wait until the end of the season to upset a lot of Gooners.

The club has a firm policy of signing on a player in plenty of time before he goes Bosman free. As I recall we've only lost a couple and they were in the first season of the Bosman ruling, ie we had not been in a position to get contracts going in the previous season as that was not the practice then.

YKD said all the right things in his interview. I don't place any adverse significance in the talk about contracts in the summer. And after all, these things can go 2 ways. If he were offered a big deal now and decided to wait - injury (God forbid) and/or loss of form might reduce his perceived wage value by the time of the new negotiations. I trust we'll sign him up for a few years this summer. A very valuable asset. Play him for (say) 3 or 4 more seasons and then clear half the club debt with a big transfer to Real (desparate to get their European Cup back from the Toon!) :-)

According to the press this morning, we have offered him £50k a week. In last night's "Football Night", the guests had different views on this. The sports editor of the Express, a mad Toon fan, thought that this was fair enough while Tony Cottee said that he couldn't get his head round it and said he didn't know how the average fan could begin to comprehend it.

5 years ago Del Piero was on 70k a week, so 50 isn't exactly unusual - never mind how vulgar it appears

I see that Veron is being quoted as saying that he wants to go back to Lazio which will no doubt fuel speculation that Man Utd want Dyer...

-- Anonymous, January 18, 2002

I'm sure an all poerful Sir Alex can persuade his board to push the boat out for key signings, and has done over the years, but the new (foriegn) guy may not be able to convince them on the need to pay £25m for an English player.

Separately .... just as we all hated Bellamy before he showed us better, does anyone on here now doubt that Dyer is a central midfield player ?

-- Anonymous, January 18, 2002

Dyer is a central midfield player - with the right partner.

If Gary Speed goes off colour (in terms of form obviously) then we could suffer big time.

if you could clone dyer would you play the two of them in MF or stick with speed?

-- Anonymous, January 18, 2002

...actually, I'd clone Patrick Viera or Roy Keane instead! ;o{]

-- Anonymous, January 19, 2002

he is no way a Viera or a Keane, but they are in no way him either, they don't have his skill or pace and have to compenate for that failing by being better tacklers and more physical

-- Anonymous, January 19, 2002

Sometimes there isn't a need to tackle - someone on here pointed this out before YKD came back and we were discussing whether he could play in the middle. Their point was his pace made up for it.

This was evident against Leeds, when I saw him run about 60-70 yards from up the pitch just to force the ball out of play when whoever it was on their left wing had the ball.
