Salgado's "Migrations" exhibit now on in Berkeley, CA

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Leica Photography : One Thread

For those interested, Salgado's exhibit "Migrations" is now being displayed at the Berkeley art museum in Berkeley, California. The exhibit is on now, and will run through 3/24/02.

I'm going to try and catch it next week.

Cheers,

I'd like to see that Jack but I'm in Toronto.

Anyone have an itinerary of what's going on in Montreal these days (Canada's windy city)?

That is more accessible for me. Recently saw the Shirin Neshat exhibit in Montreal. She's more short film than still photo but it was quite livid nevertheless.

Cheers,

Don't miss it! I was fortunate to be in NYC at the same time that it was showing at the International Center for Phototgraphy. Unbelievable images.

John, Doesn't look like you'll be in luck anytime soon, but for anyone else listed check this link

Hello Jack,

please tell us here what you think about the exhibiton .. . Saw it in Berlin towards the end of last year and it was the most stunning photoexhibition I ever saw! You could see people with tears in their eyes in front of the photos.

I got the catalogue which was sold in the museum and along with the book on WORKERS some years back, these two books I often frequent and try not to feel too confident living on the opposite side of the globe.

Best wishes

Cool- I'm going to try to see it too. How do you keep up with info. I seems to always miss stuff. And don't even mention the Ansel Adams exhibit that just left the SFMOMA... (it came in August, left this Sun. and I missed it!)

John: SFO to Toronto round trip costs about $109, not sure about Toronto to SFO. You can fly directly to Oakland, but it usually costs more than SFO. I'll even pick you up when you arrive -- just don't wear your incognito-M6-quick-draw outfit to the airport!!!

Tse-Sung: I just got lucky and read about it in the arts section of the San Jose Mercury! But I admit I also knew about the AA exhibit, but did not go since I've seen all of his work several times.

K.G.: I will be happy to report back to the group with my impressions on the exhibit -- thank you for your input!

Salgado played to packed houses in NY at the International Center for Photography this past fall. When I was at the show, a guy behind me remarked, "He must have had God as his printer." The pictures, large and in front of you, are more remarkable than the ones in the book, which is so heavy it takes a forklift to hold it while you read.

Salgado's merits (and shortcomings) have been debated in this group. It will be good to start discussion again with some folks who see the show in person. I'm a huge fan.

Seems like a lot of SF Bay area folks post here. Thanks for the tip. What's funny is that I may go to the exhibit and be standing next to several people I chat with here and not even know it.

Sport a purple M and flash the secret sign. If we don't recognize each other it will at least amuse others. Might get thrown out though.

I can only go during weekends or after work- maybe Thursdays.

In all likelihood I'll be carrying a black Manhattan Portage (red tag) shoulder bag made of ballistic nylon.

Enough of a description?
:-)

Just carry your M6TTL mounted with a flash and then put it on a tripod swung on to your shoulder 8^)

John Chan: 1) I notice from the link the show gets to Portland, Maine - probably the closest to you of the upcoming big shows. 2) Keep an eye out for smaller galleries - a little gallery here in Denver had a "Migrations" show of about 25 prints just before the holidays, so there must be multiple sets of prints circulating.

-- Andy Piper (apidens@denver.infi.net), January 18, 2002.

"so there must be multiple sets of prints circulating":

Salgado made it possible for small galleries and not-for-profits, usually NGOs with a compelling interest in his work, to buy a selection of the prints for about $500. So "Migrations" pops up in some seemingly unlikely places.

In NYC when the show was at the ICP, another gallery in Chelsea (one in that warren near the Dia Center) had a selection as well, but nothing different from the main show. At least it was free.
