Roy Wegerle In South Africa

Apropos LT's suggestion elsewhere to have a look at The Guardian's "The Fiver", I did, and saw this little gem. My first thought was 'jammy bastard', not only playing top level football but this too...

"I came out originally to visit my family and thought I would bring my clubs along and try a few of these qualifiers, just for experience more than anything else" - And 68 shots later, former QPR, Chelsea and Luton striker Roy Wegerle had qualified for the South African Alfred Dunhill championship, alongside Ernie Els and Retief Goosen. Which was nice"

In his first round he scored a 4 over par, not bad at all for your (I'm assuming) first round in your first big comp.

I can see everyone's rivited to the Golf!

Roy Wegerle's dreams of making the halfway cut in his first European Tour event were quickly extinguished in the Dunhill Championship this morning.

The former QPR, Chelsea, Blackburn and Coventry striker fired a creditable four-over-par 76 in yesterday's first round, and harboured hopes of a second-round 68 that would give him a chance of making the final two rounds.

But the 37-year-old from Pretoria got off to the worst possible start, unlike Thursday when he began with a birdie, and was quickly out of the running at Houghton Golf Club.

Starting on the 10th in the first group out, Wegerle bogeyed the first three holes and then ran up a double bogey six on the 14th. He did manage to birdie the 17th, but then dropped another shot on the 18th to be out in 41.

Three more bogeys followed before some pride was restored with consecutive birdies on the fifth and sixth, but at 10 over, Wegerle's amazing story was destined to come to an early end.

Canny golf club, Houghton like :-)

Anyone thinking of a golfing holiday would do well to consider South Africa, they have some magnificent courses, the sun is more or less guaranteed to shine all day, every day AND, with the demise (huge) of the rand (unstoppable?)a round of golf (even on the real upmarket courses, e'g. Sun City) will cost you peanuts.

Kegsy, you are far more up-to-date than me. I think it's a real shame he didn't make the cut, but bloody good on 'im for having a go!
