Black newspapers

greenspun.com : LUSENET : A.M.E. Today Discussion : One Thread

I am so excited for I just found out that in the late 1890's there were three Black owned newspapers in Montana. What is exciting is that the three papers were headquarted in the towns that had A.M.E churches! Tomorrow my daughter will begin research to see if there was a connection to the A.M.E church. I will keep you posted. As long as we are on the subject let's talk about Black newpapers, are they still effective and what black paper do you read.

The foremost authority on the Black Press in the US is my friend Henry Louis Suggs. He has written the definitive work about black newspapers in the US. He is a Distinguished Professor of History @ Clemson University, Clemson, S.C. Feel free to email his office. He'll talk your ear off, but if you mention you know me he might cut you some slack :-) QED

Please send me his email, we would love to find more info about the Black newspapers in Montana. We want to find out if there is an A.M.E connection. Thanks Bill.

Thank God in my home, newspapers were read on a daily basis. Even my grandmother who only finished Fifth Grade read the papers every day. While local and national papers were always among those read, the African American papers were also included because they offered the news from the African American perspective, which the others often did not.

Among these, and still my favorites are, "The Atlanta Daily World," "The Pittsburgh Courier," and the "Chicago Defender".

Hi Rev. Rogers,

What an excellent question!!! In Richmond, Va. we have an African-American newspaper which is freely distributed every Thursday. It is called the "Richmond Free Press" and the editor and founder was previously the editor of the "Baltimore Afro-American" and "Richmond Afro-American" newspaper. It is very effective because it publishes stories about us African-Americans from our point of view. I am particularly proud of this paper because the editor was raised in my hometown of Suffolk, Va. and grew up in a house which was 4 houses down on the same street that I lived. When I was a child, my mother and other people in the town would constantly sang his praises. I was impressed and awed by stories that people told about him. Last year, in response to a letter about the need for African-American churches to lead the way in the uplift of us black folk, he called me at home. I was delighted to have met this legend that I have heard about all my life.

Thanks everyone for your responses, I was born in Cleveland, Ohio. and the black newspaper that I grew up with was the Call & Post. It was a powerful paper doing the riots, for it gave accurate accounts of what really happened. I am still in awe that in the 1890's there were three black owned newspapers in our state of Montana. At that time there were only 2 white owned papers in the state. For those of you in Baltimore, D.c, Atlanta, Philly, what black newspapers do you have?

In Philadelphia we are blessed by the continued vigilance of the Philadelphia Tribune, one of the nation's older Black Newspapers. Although I do not live in Baltimore, I am well aware of the Afro that is published there. As a striving young Afro-American journalist, it always was a measuring rod for your skills and abilities to read the reporting their. The Murphy family were the publishing giants behind the Afro and from that family ranks came our first female Bishop, The Right Reverend Vashti McKenzie who was nee Murphy. Another of the Murphy family was a classmate, and fellow journalist, while I was at Dickson University, Arthur Murphy. And since he mines the content here at A.M.E. Today from time to time I will also give him his propers as well as his A.M.E. renown cousin from the same Murphy publishing family. Incidentally, Bishop McKenzie followed her journalistic roots before her rise to Episcopal office.

Rev. John: Hmmmm......do you suppose if I gave "Dickson University" a substantial philanthropic gift the Board of Trustees would consider changing the name to "Dickens University" :-) ??? I'm sure cantankerous faculty members and alumni (surely not you or the Murphys) would object, but at least the cost in changing stationary to the new name would be minimal. QED

Brother Bill

My thumping fingers caused a mockery of my school...it should have read Dickinson College but since I just jumped in for a second (felt appropriate to write a piece about newspapers from a bustling newspaper office) I typoed the college. Now there are some that spell Dickinson (albeit correctly) Dickenson. Now it only would be be a short stretch to view that as Dickens On University. That sounds like a column header to me :-) And the Murphy's and the Fisher's would not complain I am sure. By the way another of my brother alumni is Rufus Caleb, a renown writer of plays. I wish that muse had fallen on my shoulders rather than the pica pole, the printers ink and the newsprint...although in my most recent reincarnation my printing is done with electrons and over miles of networks.

I am excited to hear about these newspapers, I am going to see if they have web pages on line. I will tell them about our wonderful A.M.E Today. I know there must be more papers to talk about. How is the reporting different than other newspapers? One of the things I notices in the Call and Post was that matters of religion were very important and church news received a lot of coverage.

Rev. John:

I'll make sure your faux pas (mispelling of your alma mater) remains confidential. If need be, I'll stand as your character witness if Dickinson College chooses to press charges and revoke your hard-earned academic credentials. Now that by-line "Dickens On University" is indeed pregnant with possibilities. A venerable institution of higher learning where enlightened discussion, next-generation research, athletic prowess and BBQ ribs & potatoe salad all co-exist. QED
