Get in there lads ... the one team in the Scottish league that I look out for..... Theyre bliddy English anyway. GLASGOW, Jan 15 (Reuters) - Rangers were held to a goalless draw in the Scottish Cup by unglamorous Berwick Rangers on Tuesday in a game reminiscent of the part-timers' famous victory over the Glasgow giants 35 years ago. Berwick, currently bottom of the second division, could not quite match the heroics of the 1967 side which beat Rangers 1-0 in the biggest shock in Scottish Cup history but will be delighted to have earned a third round replay at Ibrox. Rangers were disappointing. Tore Andre Flo had two good early chances but put them straight at goalkeeper Willie McCulloch. Berwick were otherwise untroubled in the first half and Rangers's second-half onslaught failed to materialise as the home side held out. "It was poor performance, pedestrian," Rangers manager Alex McLeish admitted afterwards. "We didn't really look as if we were up for the fight as much as we should have been. I expected more from my players," he told Sky Sports television. Berwick manager Paul Smith said he had urged his team to match the achievement of their 1967 predecessors and was delighted with their efforts. "We said 'Go and make yourself legends as well'," Smith said. "The players were absolutely magnificent. They worked really hard and we frustrated Rangers the whole game." The 1967 success came against a Rangers team who were holders of the Cup and who later that season went on to reach the European Cup Winners' Cup final. The winners of the replay will meet premier league Hibernian, who eased past Stranraer 4-0. Francisco Luna, David Zitelli, Gary Smith and Eduardo Hurtado were the scorers for Hibs.

Watched the game on telly. It was pretty dire - at least until well into the 2nd half when you started thinking Berwick might just hold them.

As you can imagine, the final few minutes were pretty frantic as G/Rangers threw everything at them, but in truth created very few clear-cut chances. Actually, that was the story of the game with Glasgow having the lions share of possession without creating much at all. In fact, they only created one really good chance in the entire game when Flo headed a easy chance straight into the keepers hands from 8yds.

Berwick worked their socks off, and Rangers looked utterly devoid of creative ideas. Well done little Berwick - fantastic achievement; did themselves & Edwin's Kingdom proud.

The 1967 result had Jock Wallace in goal for Berwick. He was the same keeper who played for Bedford when they beat us 2-1 in 1963 at SJP. Two amazing feats of giant killing - I don't know why he doesn't get mentioned more, like (say) Dickie Guy or Ronnie B*****d R*****d.

Memo to Swift:

Edwin's Kingdom = north of the Humber and up into eastern side of present-day Scottish borders. Kingdom was itself divided into two areas, Bernicia being one I think farther north. Doubtless someone will confirm and come up with t'other ???
