Problem with Program wheel on EOS 5

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Canon EOS FAQ forum : One Thread

I have had an EOS 5 for 3 years now. However, last week was the second time that the program wheel gave me a problem. It stops clicking into positions, and just free-rotates. I've spent a fair amount repairing it once before at the Canon dealer, and seems like I have to spend again. Is anyone else having a similar problem with their EOS 5?

Many people have this problem it seems. I've never had it in the 5 1/2 years that I've owned the EOS 5 which I bought second hand. Lots and lots of people have though. There doesn't seem to be much which can be done to prevent the problem.

So far my new Command Dial has lasted 2.5 years after replacement. But, some they do, some they don't. Horizon Electronics will replace the cheap plastic parts with metal and disable the lock button. I hear it's a better fix than replacing the Command Dial with the same old.

Issac speaks what I spoke a year ago, that I never had a dial failure in several years and even buying one of my two EOS 5s used. Withint he past year, both dials have failed. I just have one read to send off to Horizon for repair. They do an excellent job and are highly recommended. Price two months ago was about 120 bucks. Expensive, but it fixes the problema dn the dial is better for it, being easier to rotate and all that.

Lots more info. Even how to fix it yourself, if you're so inclined.

I hope to avoid this problem...I will be upgrading to an EOS 3 in a couple of months time, so if it doesn't go by then, it won't be my problem.

The Command Dial often dies on the A2/A2E/5. Both my bodies have had the dial problem. Canon repaired one, Horizon repaired the other. Horizon's is the better fix for something over $100. It's worth it, the dial operates more smoothly and it's less likely to break again.
