Pregnancy Cravings

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Country Families : One Thread

Recently I was e-mailing someone who shall remain nameless, and we started a discussion about what we craved when pregnant! It was so funny. I won't tell hers, but I will tell mine!

Every time I was pregnant, and after I was over the horrifying 3 months of sickness, I craved cheeseburgers and watermelon. That was all I wanted to eat. I could have eaten half a watermelon at any given time. And when ever I went for my doctors checkup I always stopped on the way home at the Dairy Queen and got a cheeseburger with everything on it. So I didn't indulge that one too much, but I am telling you there were times I dreamed about them!!

What were/are your favorite cravings?

When I was pregnant with my boys, I craved potatoes, any kind of potatoes. I even peeled and ate raw ones. With the girls, it was chocolate. I couldn't get enough chocolate. Weird, isn't it? Winona

-- Winona in MO (thompsonwin45@hotmail.com), January 15, 2002.

Malt vinegar with one-I could drink it and cucumbers, potato chips and fried chicken with another, nothing significant with #3-anything I could get. And with the first one radishes and ice water together. I couldn't eat eggs or Kraft maccaroni and cheese till after the birth. I cracked open a couple eggs and for whatever reason they looked green, I was going to have the mac and cheese with them, nope, didn't happen.

Mexican food! We were at one restaurant so often the waitress said she was sure my baby would come out Mexican. Baby wasn't ;). But I did bring my children up enjoying ethnic foods too.

hagen-daz swiss chocolate almond ice cream with one.(gained 50 lbs with this one.) Spicy Indian dishes and grapefruit with the other.

-- Ann Markson (tngreenacres@hotmail.com), January 15, 2002.

Greeen chile cheeseburgers with the first one..........too sick with the second to crave anything...........

-- connie in nm (karrelandconnie@msn.com), January 15, 2002.

Mostly I think of things I didn't want to eat-I had pre-ecamplsia with both mine-not so bad with the second, I just wanted cheese and crackers and ginger ale. Its funny though-as soon as the babies were born I wanted to eat and eat and eat. Stuff I never wanted before tasted fantastic.

I think Dairy Queen makes the best cheeseburgers_I LOVE those and onion rings! I fighting the urge to have one for lunch- who knows, I may give in! If I eat one today, and nothing else til thursday weigh in.........

-- Kelly (homearts2002@yahoo.com), January 15, 2002.

I threw up for nine months for the first pregnancy. For the second, I had a lot of heartburn. But I craved Kroll's hamburgers constantly with both of them. For anyone who never went to Kroll's Resteraunt in Green Bay,WI, you'll never know what you missed! Their hamburgers are wonderful. There is a secret sauce and a pat of pure butter dripping out of them. I could have ( and still could) eat them for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

-- Ardie /WI (ardie54965@hotmail.com), January 15, 2002.

For both of mine, McDonalds fries and peanut butter. No, not together! Peanut butter cookies, PB & J sandwiches, peanut butter off a spoon....LOL Both were girls, wonder if it would have changed if one were a boy.

Incidentally, for those of you who suffered with longterm or severe morning sickness, I've recently read that this means it's a very healthy/viable pregnancy (lots of the right hormones?). Don't know if that's true.

-- Rheba (rb@nospam.not), January 15, 2002.

Just wanted to add that neither of my girls are allergic to peanut butter after my addiction to it during pregnancy. They are, however, addicted to it as well. A good thing, though, since they tend not to care for meat much.

-- Rheba (rb@notmail.not), January 15, 2002.

Fish sandwiches and fried mushrooms! I ate those at least every other day. I was supposed to be off my feet from about 2months, so every one would come by and take me out to eat. They knew what I would order before I set down. I can't even smell a fish sandwich or fried mushrooms without getting nauses!!!

With my first daughter, it was cheese. I couldn't get enough cheese - especially that pimento cheese spread in those tiny little jars. Once I absolutely HAD to have those really nasty plastic tasting chocolate donuts that come in the six packs from vending machines - and then I dipped them in the pimento cheese. Loved it then, makes me want to hurl just thinking about it now! And my oldest daughter loves cheese. We can't keep it in the house if she knows it's there!

With my second daughter, it was spicy things - anything spicy. Before I knew I was pregnant, I found myself eating sardines with jalapenos on ritz crackers one day! I NEVER eat jalapenos! I should have known something was up, but it took me going to the doctor, thinking that maybe I was pre-menopausal (I was 39) or something, to find out that I had been blessed with another child! And of course, she does love spicy things - especially any kind of sausage.

My dear hubby was so wonderful to me through both pregnancies. One night, when I was pregnant with my first, I woke up in the middle of the night craving lemon meringue pie. Bless his heart, he called around and found a Denny's that was open and drove there on icy streets to get me that pie! What a sweetheart! He's the best!

-- Cheryl in Ks (cherylmccoy@rocketmail.com), January 15, 2002.

Pepperoni pizza, bagels with cream cheese, ice cold water.

At the moment I cannot stand eggs, hot dogs, milk, or stuff that is too sugary.

-- Nameless in Ontario (ha, ha) (keeper8@attcanada.ca), January 15, 2002.

When I was pregnant with #2, I liked to put English peas in my grill cheese sandwiches. lol.

With #6, I practically lived on stew. I could eat it 3 times a day.

-- mary (marylgarcia@aol.com), January 15, 2002.

I craved tree ripened peaches and apricots. Those can be pretty hard to come by, but they can be found...at a price!

When I was carrying my redhead, It was hot and spicy Mexican food. Yes, she thrives on hot food even when she was a baby.

I can tell when I am pregnant because I cannot be in he same room with an egg without getting sick.

-- Laura (Ladybugwrangler@hotmail.com), January 15, 2002.

I could not stand the smell of coffee (I never drink it) or the smell of frying bacon when I was pregant!

-- Melissa (me@home.net), January 15, 2002.

With my first pregnacy I craved jelly donuts and with my fourth i ate sliced lemons with salt.Lemon juice first thing in the mornig really does help with morning sickness.

-- willa (goodall6@hotmail.com), January 15, 2002.

Oranges, oranges and more oranges. And ice water.

-- Kari (prettyhere@truevine.net), January 15, 2002.

I didn't really have any cravings, as such, but I did tell my husband that I needed chocolate!! LOL he never suspected anything. With my first I too was sick all the time. We owned an hotel at the time and I cooked breakfast and dinner everyday for the guests. Just the slightest smell of food sent me running. I had to cook with a scarf tied over my nose, so I couldn't smell anything. Looked funny but worked really well.

Is the nameless person definately pregnant, or have I missed the announcement.

Alison

-- Alison Homa (alisonhoma@hotmail.com), January 15, 2002.

I craved chocolate malts. One sidenote...I never experienced motion sickness in my life. I used to read and crochet while traveling in the car. After my third child was born, I can't even ride in the back seat anymore! I am the one who is always yelling "I GOT SHOTGUN !!"

-- Harmony (harmonyfarm57@hotmail.com), January 15, 2002.

The "nameless" person had made no formal announcement of her condition or non-condition!

-- Melissa (me@home.net), January 15, 2002.

With my first son it was homemade hashbrowns I craved. I had to make and cook them myself, they had to be a certain way. I gained alot with that one!!! Second son I craved oranges...all I wanted to eat was fresh oranges. And....we lived in Minnesota at the time in winter..so they wern't as nice as I wanted and cost a fortune..AND we lived 40 miles from town!!!!! My other 2 sons are not "homemade". During both pregnancies I could not stand the smell of bacon cooking or gasoline. Would make me puke everytime.

-- Jenny (auntjenny6@aol.com), January 15, 2002.

Junior Mints. Had one small box of them every day the last three months. Also, and ok get ready- sweet pickles and a Butterfinger bar, would take a bit of each - oh what a great taste it was!

-- Katie (homesteader@accessnevada.com), January 15, 2002.

I was just telling my mother-in-law that my boss felt so sorry for me when I was pregnant with #1 that he used to come by and ask if he could bring me a Dr.Pepper from upstairs each time he went after one for himself! I used to drink it all the time, but that syrupy smell and taste just turned my stomach, and I always felt bad that he was being so nice and I turned him down every time!

By the way, I still don't drink it anymore -- too sweet for me now!

-- Christine in OK (cljford@mmcable.com), January 15, 2002.

I ate M & M"s by the bagfull for all 3 pregnancies and had to wear it off after all 3. Jenn

-- Jenn (normaj3@countrylife.net), January 15, 2002.

D.Q. & Back then they were not open in the winter months!!!!! I was always wanting a D.Q. when they were not open!!

-- Sonda (sgbruce@birch.net), January 16, 2002.

Tomatoes, tomatoes, tomatoes!!! Fresh, canned, in a sauce or anyway I could get them. I still like them now, but nothing compared to when I was pregnant.

-- Annie (mistletoe6@earthlink.net), January 16, 2002.

Melissa, you reminded me of coffee, I can't stand it to begin with, I can't even open a can now. With the second one I would get so nauseated from the smell, never did throw up but I sure ran like i was going to. That was the only pregnancy that I din't throw up during. I also craved raw green beans and garlic pickles for a while then the malt vinegar. And then English crawler(sp) at 3 in the morning later on.

With # four, everytime the woodstove had to be re-lit, I'd go running, that was our only source of heat.

-- Cindy (SE. IN) (atilrthehony@hotmail.com), January 16, 2002.

Reading this stuff is hilarious! For the last three weeks I've been thinking/hoping that I might be pregnant but I don't want to take a pregnancy test for fear that I might jinx it. After reading some of your food cravings I am a little surer that I may indeed be pregnant. All I have eaten for the last week is cheese, crackers and oranges. I had two bites of a yogurt this morning and I had to throw it out because it made me queasy. I also have an insanely dry mouth? Can this be attributed to pregnancy?

Thanks, LeeLee

I am pregnant for the first time and lemonsw/ salt and other sour foods such as pickles, and vinegar chips are my cravings besides it also helps me when i get naseas. All fried foods make me sick i am at my first trimester.

-- Sara Martinez (Jackykf01@yahoo.com), June 21, 2002.

I have about 3 weeks left into my 2nd pregnacy and I have been craving some of the strangest things. Such as: Instant coffee, decaff of course, (by the spoon fulls), I only will drink ice water if it has lots of lemon juice in it, Vineger, and yes I can just tip up the bottle and take a swig, and black olives with or without vineger. Me and meat just don't get along this pregnacy.

-- Doobie (jphull@mindspring.com), August 10, 2002.

I must CHEW on rubber bands. My doctor has never heard of such a thing and neither has anyone I have asked. I craved chewing on them for my first and now second pregnancy. I love the smell of them and have to chew them all the time. Any ideas on why???

-- Jennifer Bell (bell@n-a.net), September 04, 2002.

I AM PREGANT WITH MY FIRST CHILD AND THE ONLY THING THAT I REALLY WANT IS SUBS FROM SUBWAY, SOUR PICKLES, GREEN BEANS WITH VINEGAR, SALT AND VINEGAR POTATO CHIPS AND SPAGHETTI AT TIMES. EVEN THOUGH I HAVE ALL OF THESE CRAVINGS, I HAVE STILL BEEN BLESSED TO NOT HAVE ANY MORNING SICKNESS. I WAS WONDERING IF THAT WAS NORMAL, OR IS THERE SOMETHING WRONG FOR ME TO NOT HAVE ANY KIND OF MORNING SICKNESS AT 9 WEEKS PREGNANT?!!!

-- Amanda Davis (Mandii18@yahoo.com), September 06, 2002.

I am in my first trimester of my first pregnancy and I crave Crab, Alaskan king crab legs, Peanut Butter, watermellon, chinese food, popsicles, and find myself shoving food in my mouth faster then ever in my life. I wake at 2am and am starving, my husband says go get cereal but I want CRABS!! One more thing.. Pickles and peanutbutter.. yum.. after the pregnancy I will never look at pickles the same way.

-- Felicia (cosette1206@yahoo.com), September 10, 2002.

We are expecting our 1st baby and are 11 weeks along. I know that this has to be BAD for me but I CRAVE! MCDonald's McRib Sandwiches. Thank god- they just brought that one back. I think it may be the bread and BBQ sauce. Other than that- I have also had a fetish for cornflakes- I ate three bowls the other morning!

Take Care!

-- Jaylene (jaylene@cox.net), September 19, 2002.

I am 17 weeks pregnant wih our first child. Luckly I haven't experience any morning sickness, At my first trimeseter I had cravings for Fizzy Sweets. This trimester I have cravings for Yoghurt, Freshly Squeezed Orange Juice, Fizzy Sweets, spicy foods especially curries, potato chips and Cheeseburgers.

-- Alison Weaving (openshaw.weaving@ntlworld.co.uk), September 24, 2002.

This website is cracking me up. We are trying for a second child and the only thing that has sounded good to me is tuna sandwiches with pickles so Im thinking we may have suceeded. With my first child it was Jack in The Box eggrolls - had to eat them everyday, then later I moved on to Wendy's cheesburgers with extra pickles. I love the chick who was taking swigs out of the vinegar bottle. That cracks me up.

-- Nicole (coaleigh@yahoo.com), September 24, 2002.

I am cracking up reading some of these answers, isn't funny how our bodies react? I am still not sure that I am pregnant, but I have gotten this severe craving for chocolate. You can ask anyone that is close to me and they will tell you that I RARELY eat sweets. It used to make me sick. Now! OH! Just yesteray I was going around the office begging for chocolate, and had to stop at the store for candy bars!!! I have only had these cravings for about a week. I am not going to take a test until I miss a period, but I think this is a huge symptom for me. Let me know what you think. Good luck to all!!

-- Jamie Hill (jamielhill@earthlink.net), September 30, 2002.

I forgot to add to my above statment: I was at home yesterday by myself when one of my cravings hit. I was so desperate for chocolate, I took a gram cracker and poured Hershey Syrup of the cracker. I decided that that was not enought, so I opened my mouth and started pouring the syrup in my mouth and drank about 4 mouth fulls. YUCK!! I would have never done that in the past. Oh well, here is for hoping that I am right, and that I am pregnant:-)

-- Jamie Hill (Jamielhill@earthlink.net), September 30, 2002.

All I want are German bologna sandwiches and cold water. I also have had a very strange aversion to chocolate. (I usually LOVE chocolate). Nearly lost it the other day when my husband opened a pack of oreos. It is still early for me, but that is what has hit me thus far.

-- Beth (eehmoore@aol.com), October 08, 2002.

I am about 4 months along and haven't really had any major cravings. That kind of worries me because could that mean somethins is wrong. Although I did go through a two week or so phase when all I wanted to eat were Miracle Whip and ham sandwiches, and if I didn't have any ham I just ate Miracle Whip sandwiches.

-- Melissa (free2flow3484@hotmail.com), October 09, 2002.

That counts! Besides, I read that some women dont get cravings at all so dont worry. But I would definatly count Miracle Whip sandwiches as a bizarre craving ;)

-- Nicole (coaleigh@yahoo.com), October 10, 2002.

-- shelly (imogen_sv@yahoo.com), October 17, 2002.
