Earthquake rocks Indonesian capital

01/15/2002

Associated Press

JAKARTA, Indonesia – An earthquake rocked Indonesia's capital today, making tall buildings sway and prompting thousands to flee their offices.

There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage, police said.

The magnitude of the temblor was not immediately known, Indonesia's Meteorological and Geophysics Agency said.

The quake struck at about 2:20 p.m. and appeared to have lasted about two minutes.

"It was going on a little too long for my taste. There was no hysteria," said Diarmid O'Sullivan, a British consultant who was among scores who left one office block in downtown Jakarta as a precaution.

Indonesia, the world's largest archipelagic nation, is prone to seismic upheavals because of its location on the so-called Pacific "Ring of Fire," a meeting of tectonic plates, slabs of land that move across the Earth's surface.

Doesn't this look strange? I've never see it look this way before. A lot of little (and not so little) circles that aren't filled in for earthquakes. What is going on?

A few years ago I was trapped by myself in an elevator here at work that was doing very bizarre things. Going up a few floors, hovering, going down several floors, hovering... At first I was just annoyed that I couldn't get off, let alone at the floor I wanted to go to. But then I started imagining it plummeting to the ground, 38 stories below. I'm not sure how long, but it might have been a couple minutes altogether. I took it calmly at the beginning, but gradually became nearly hysterical and couldn't function for a whilel after I made my escape (SCREAMING at people not to take THAT elevator...). I would think two minutes worth of earthquake would be quite unsettling.

Must have redone their graphics. Colorful. I got stuck in an elevator once, but I had just bouht my lunch and a drink and also had a full pack of ciggies and a full lighter. Luckily, it was an old elevator, no Muzak. The elevator lady (they still had uniformed ladies to hold open the doors) was more upset than I was.
