well you are right that the power is over kill but it makes it more fun to have some extra power to make sure that you can do any thing that you want but if you do use an engine like that i think that it is not a go cart any more it is considerd a dune bugy because you need more than just parts that you can make you need to buy drivelines and all sorts of other things that are otherwize not necisary to make it go any were. it kinda kills the fun any way if you just buy it you should make it and have a good time . make your own desighnt and just spend money on steel and weld it yourself. it makes for soemthing to do with buddys too.

lawnmower engines generally dont go too fast. i hear that riding lawnmowers can get a good 10mph. For a lawnmower engine to work, you have to have a method of converting the power that the vertical driveshaft has into the horizontal sprocket. so you need some beveling sprockets. there are other methods at http://www.csn.ul.ie/~steviewdr/drive/drive.htm. you cant put your lawnmower engine on its side or you'll blow your pistons. 2 stroke motorbike engines work good because it has a horizontal driveshaft so all you need is a chain. you could use a chainsaw engine as well. you can get engines/frames/parts for a bunch of different motor vehicles (including gokarts) at http://www.mfgsupply.com/m/c/index.html?id=HEdYYoNx .

you really dont need plans for a go kart the simple ones just make a rectagle weld some bolts on back front is a pipe with with 3 inch pipe on both sides 1-----1 shaped like that stick bolts in and a C shaped piece around the bolt and how I did my brakes Are first off I have a live axle I took a gearbox from an old rider on the side there is a drum and a brake all ready for you put the drum on weld a bold to hold the brake add a cable and there it is the biggest trick is dont make it hard on your self lots off people have old riders around they will give you for free just rob parts off them add a slip clutch for 20 bucks at gocartparts.com and ride hard

you cant put a lawnmower engine on a go kart because in a lawnmower engine the oil is at the bottom and the same for a gokart engine but when you flip the lawnmower engine around the oil is not at the bottom therefore causing you engine to break down quicker and probably not lasting long.

An easy way to build a cart is to first go to a junkyard near you (you can go to google, search for "find junkyards near you" and find one) and try to get an engine that works from a junker motorcycle or dirtbike (Get an extra one for back up, and if your first works, then try to fix the extra to use as a regular bike) for a motor. It makes it easy because they already have a chain with a gear on them. Then try to find some strong pipes (thin, strong pipes are great), or go to a store that supplies them, like Home Depot, or Osh. Get small wheels, and add a ger to one of the back wheels (if you did both wheels connected to the motor, the cart wouldn't turn very well). build the base, it could be just a rectangle out of the pipes, or something you have in mind. Put the stuff together, move the ignition key slot to the front where you will sit for easy access (From the motorcycle), and you could add lights in the front for night driving. Mabee even add a radio or cd player for fun. You can find lots of free stuff in a junkyard. I hope this helps. Have fun and be safe. Jsust figured I'd add a bit of info as i plan on finishing my cart soon to go racing: a rebuilt 100 cc two stroke will do about 130 or so, light up the tires at any speed, and turn laps (on the proper frame of course) quicker than most bikes... using a 250 would be sick (though cool as hell!).

so, there seems to be a few different strains of messages on this board. after a quick browse through, I have now categorized them as follows:

A: the inquizitive 12 year old wondering how to make a go-kart. B: the extremely obnoxious, rude, insecure, apparent 4 year old who likes to project his opinions of other persons mothers in which to make himself feel better - or somewhat less impotent. it's ok guys, your balls with drop sooner or later. and lastly, C: the real man. the man of men. the man who goes onto this message board, to challenge any lesser of a man in the taunting of not how powerful his kart is - but how dangeruosly suicidal it is. it does not take a real man to simply drive a go-kart - but to drive it knowing he himself does not hold his own life in his hands.

I own a 8 HP (single engine, non shifter), Briggs go kart. the catch? the frame is contructed completely of ABS plastic plumbing pipe. this is a tip to all you guys out there: it's STUPID LIGHT (and rather stupid period), and easy to construct. the entire kart weighs 220 lbs - with me in it, the engine, and 4 huge beefy "turf saver" riding lawn mower tires. this kart does a top speed of 60, has an acceleration not to be meatled with and to top it all off - has no brakes.

it's all fun and games until one dreadful winter afternoon, and I decide to take it out for a little "sno-karting". I topped out at 50 around a huge bend - all four tires slipping out - and at that moment I realized I was a very manly man. the gas pedal stuck. I accelerated to 60, just to slam into a concrete planter. the entire frame and my body shattered. I took a lot of the impact in my legs, and thankfully I'm a fit 19 years of age, so I repaired quickly. as for the kart, it immediately exploded on impact and sits in my garage, to be fixed at a later date. as for my pants, they needed cleaning badly.

that's right. I taunt all you.

PS how about all you 4 year olds get some education (like my university mechanical engineering) - so at least you'll have some excuse to be less of a dumb ass. put whatever knowledge of mechanics to good use.
