M3 shutter curtain LEAK

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Leica Photography : One Thread

hi guys,

its confirmed, my M3 curtain has light leak. Is this common?

Anyway, I sent in for repairs. My hands are very itchy now.

Common in a 50 year old camera? I guess it shouldn't be too surprising. The difference with the M3 is that you can still have it repaired and it's still worth the cost of repairing.

Pinholes in a cloth shutter can easily be fixed at home using Kodak liquid black opaque. I have had many such leaks in old M shutters.

Hi, Travis:

I second Peter's suggestion. I got a pinhole in the shutter curtain of my eldest M3, took it to "Click" (local camera technician here in Concepción - Chile) and saw how this gentleman used black opaque to gently touch it up rather succesfully. No problems since then, more than two years ago. Still something else: he didn't accept any payment because it was too small a job to be charged for. Just said he expected me to go back to him if a more important reason ever showed up.

Good luck, Travis

-Iván
