Bellamy worries about Dyer!

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Unofficial Newcastle United Football Club BBS : One Thread

Quoted on Team squak as worrying that Dyer's great form will make him a wanted man, especially after the World Cup.

'The way Kieron is playing, everyone from Real Madrid to teams in Serie A and beyond will be after him'

I have to say I agree Craig. I'm worried about him too!

I saw this also. I don't think we have anything to worry about. I mean, why would he want to move to another club when he can get Champions League football with us next season?

I tend to agree - if we're playing in the CL it is far less likely KD would want to leave. However, there is the little matter of his contract to sort, and his probable financial expectations to meet.

On the down side, if he did ultimately decide to go - always a possibility - his transfer value is inexorably rising again. At this rate he could be worth £30m by the time Becks is holding the Jules Rimet above his shaven pate in July!

We can't have it both ways. It's no surprise that the effort and form he is displaying comes at a time when there's a potential World Cup place up for grabs in an England team that might actually do something. Let's benefit from it and try and make sure the same sorts of incentives continue for as long as possible (next step would be to build on a potential Premiership winning side, then one that can challenge at the top in Europe). I've always said it's much better to have players making a name for themselves whilst their at the club, rather than spending £20M on players that have made it elsewhere and what you want is for them to try and reproduce it again, with all the presuures of expectation coupled with diminishing incentives (done it all already, and have already made mega millions).

And Clive Tyldesley on Saturday, didn't seem able to resist the temptation of reminding everybody watching that Dyer is a player 'Leeds have long coveted'.

I must admit, that's the one cloud that could be loomimg just below the horizon. It's just about imperative that we get into the Champions' League, because I don't think Dyer has the maturity or the loyalty, to put up with mediocrity for much longer, and I don't think the EUFA Cup is a big enough stage.

And I'd be really peed off if we didn't fight tooth and nail to hang onto him, even to the extent of foregoing an astronomical transfer fee. We have to think big, even though we may not have the finacial clout at the moment. The 'it's good business' approach leaves a revolting stink in my nostrils. We have to be better than that.

I agree with the large price tag which should be attached to him, should anyone enquire about buying him from us. I'm a bit of a fan of the Spanish system, where the player signs a contract for say four years, and he has to see out that contract or the interested club has to stump up astronomical amounts of cash due to the buy out clause. The only thing about this is, I'm not sure what happens at the end of the four years. Is said player then available on a free or can he be sold for say half the price of his buy out clause?

PB,

We've discussed this before. Their is very, very little chance the Club will themselves elect to sell KD - unless he refuses to sign a contract extension. Then they have no choice but to sell him or allow him to walk away for nowt.

However, if he decided he wanted to be away, then all he has to do is merely indicate he will not sign an extension - then the above scenario kicks in.

Well I admit this humble pie I've been eating lately is mighty tasty. As long as YKD continues to deliver the goods for us, I agree we must try our hardest to hang onto him. Right now I can't think of an amount of money for which I'd be willing to sell him. As Clarky points out, it is dependent on him wanting to stay with us. The nice thing is that if he did want to leave we should be able to demand a bundle of money. So win-win. :-)

You're perfectly correct Clarky, that was the owld ticker tokking.

Mr Sensible of Boring has to admit that if Dyer won't sign an extension, we have to screw every million we can get from whichever continental side he signs for.

Because, ON NO ACCOUNT WHATSOEVER must he be allowed to go to another English club. Even Mr Sensible of Boring sees that as the rock bottom no compromise requirement.
