putting peanuts in your coke/coke bottle

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

just read an old thread about strange foods. i live in the midwest and in the early 60's we put a small package of peanuts in our cokes- they were bottles back then, just as ernest did. is this just a regional thing? i remember trying root beer and other pops but coke or pepsi or double cola was the best. it was real salty and the hardest thing was to pop the peanuts out of the bottle when all the cola was gone....

We did the same in rural N.E. Georgia in the 60's. Also, was a debate that the Coke in the small bottles tasted better than the larger bottle!

Hello JS,

I grew up in a very rural part of South Carolina in the sixties. We only had a General Store that was about 2 miles from our house. They had a Coke machine that despensed the little coke bottles. Right next to the Coke machine was a Nabs machine. It had the little packet of peanuts that I would put into my Cokes. I learned this from my grandmother. She said it was good and when I tried it I too found out it was g-o-o-d too!

Sincerely,

Ernest

We did that here in Oklahoma too. Another good treat is mixing salted peanuts with red hots and just eating them out of a bowl. Really Good!

I haven't seen anyone doing it in years but some used to do it in Florida way back when too. Come to think of it, I think I've done it a time or two myself but it was only an occasional thing.

thats just dang WEIRD ! ! ! ! ! !! ! ! !

-- Stan (sopal@net-port.com), January 12, 2002.

I still do it. Stan , have you ever tried it? Tom's brand peanuts and a Coke classic and you have an "Alabama Aperitif "thats easy to consume on the way home for supper. Try it , then you can say its wierd. I said the same about squeezing crawdad heads till a Cajun friend introduced me to the practice and its purty good.

-- Jay Blair in N. AL (jayblair678@yahoo.com), January 12, 2002.

Yep, we did it here in Florida as well. Had to be a Pepsi in the 10 oz bottle.

-- Elizabeth (ekfla@aol.com), January 12, 2002.

My mom and her brother and sister in south Georgia still do it.

-- Tana McCarter (mcfarm@totelcsi.net), January 12, 2002.

I always liked mine with Pepsi and my friend always had hers with Dr.Pepper here in Arkansas

-- sherry (chickadee259@yahoo.com), January 12, 2002.

I used to like a small bag of M&M's in a bottle of coke. Wonder if I could stand it now? Mona Lea

-- Mona Lea (monalea@hotmail.com), January 12, 2002.

I live in Virginia now, but grew up in Michigan--we too put peanuts in Coke when I was a teenager.

-- Sharon (spangenberg@hovac.com), January 12, 2002.

Did it in Utah, too! Can't say as I've had it for years, tho. Now, squeezing crawdad heads??? That's a new one for me. Jan

I've heard of it but never tried it. Doesn't Rita sing about that in the song "I was country when country wasn't cool"? I think I'm going to try it.

-- Debbie in MO (risingwind@socket.net), January 12, 2002.

I don't know about Rita, but I know Barbara Mandrell did that song...

-- Tana McCarter (mcfarm@totelcsi.net), January 12, 2002.

I still remember the Barbara Mandrell concert when the "Possum" slipped out on stage and finished the last chorus of the song duet style with her. You could sure tell she didn't expect George to be there.

-- wolfie (wolfiequinn@hotmail.com), January 13, 2002.

For some reason I was thinking that when I would try that with my Dr. Pepper it would create a volcanic reaction!

-- Mel Kelly (melkelly@webtv.net), January 13, 2002.

Jay, we had a crowd over last weekend for a crawdad boil! The heads are pretty darn good! We cooked up a big pot with corn, sausage and new potatoes. And of course, lots of beer and napkins! Best wishes!

-- cowgirlone (cowgirlone47@hotmail.com), January 13, 2002.

That's a new one on me! I wonder if you left those peanuts in the Coke overnight if they'd dissolve? :)

-- Earthmama (earthmama48@yahoo.com), January 13, 2002.

Cowgirlone, crawdad HEADS? We love crawdads (mudbugs to some) but the heads??? How do you eat them?

-- Rosalie (Dee) in IN (deatline@globalsite.net), January 13, 2002.

Never tried peanuts in anything but good ole Dr. Pepper, still do it every once in a while. Of course I came from Texas too. Putting them in coke just doesn't sound right ;-)

-- j willis (jwillis@louish.com), January 13, 2002.

J Willis -- you got it right! Has to be a Dr. Pepper. We stuffed ours in West-by-god-Va.

Speaking of Dr. Pepper. How much does a six pack of DP in the 16 oz size cost in Texas? It is truly obscene how much they are charging for soda pop!

-- J McFerrin (JMcFerrin@aol.com), January 13, 2002.

Rosalie, after you separate the tail from the rest of the body, eat the tail , and then suck the goodies out of the head. It really sounds gross but it's not bad! Good luck!

-- cowgirlone (cowgirlone47@hotmail.com), January 13, 2002.

I'm from Alaska and cokes were very big there, too. Never heard of putting peanuts in them, but the Dentist I worked for would put a tooth in a coke for a kid that wouldn't brush his/her teeth well and show it to him next appointment, and it was mostly dissolved. I haven't had a coke since 1943 when I found a cigar butt in the bottle after drinking it.

-- Duffy (hazelm@tenforward.com), January 13, 2002.

In the book "Bluegrass" by Borden Deal, the very rich man (with all the racehorses) put peanuts in grape soda. I loaned this book to a 67 year old real cowboy, and HE started doing it! ;-)

-- Mona Jensen (keypenjones@centurytel.net), January 16, 2002.

I've never heard about the peanut / coke mixture but here's some interesting combinations: try taking ham, spreading cream cheese on it, then rolling it up with a pickle in the middle. Heated up it's even better. You cant stop eating it!! Another good one is ketchup on cooked broccoli. It tastes exactly like a McDonalds french fry!!! You wont believe it until you try it!

-- CJ (coidogg@aol.com), February 10, 2002.

Ah....but have you ever tried this?

Cockroaches in Coke Is Secret Potion SALT LAKE CITY (Reuters) - Crushed cockroaches in diet coke -- that's what Australian aerial freestylist Jacqui Cooper says she drank to recover from a serious back injury.

``It wrecks your stomach inside but it fixed my back,'' she was quoted as saying on the Salt Lake City Games Web site.

Cooper, one of the favorites for the women's Olympic gold, said the potion helped draw out ``bad'' blood from her injury. She was doing push-ups within three weeks of fracturing her vertebra.

Cooper, a triple World Cup champion, is expected to try a rare triple jump in the competition on February 18.
