He he Ciara. Also on a much more realistic note - we have 42 points. Safe and it's only mid-january. Has the world gone mad?

-- Anonymous, January 12, 2002

I think the arse will draw with Liverpool and The Manure will get beat. Leaving us top! But then still Arsenal have another game in hand :(

-- Anonymous, January 12, 2002

I use BT Openworld as my access to the net, they have a headline this morning of "Newcastle vistory aids title challengers", you can but smile

-- Anonymous, January 13, 2002

Try Eurosport: "Newcastle beat 10-man Leeds". Boo! Hiss! What was the score 11 v 11 twats?

-- Anonymous, January 13, 2002

>>the entire back line going missing after just 28 seconds must be some sort of record even by Tyneside standards.

I had to smile when I read that in the Observer report on footballunlimited.co.uk but who the hell cares (for now at least) coz yet again WE ARE TOP OF THE LEAGUE SAY WE ARE TOP OF THE LEAGUE !!!

HAha I'm still suffering from my trip to Korea in December and practicing for the World Cup.

Steven Byers was before a select committee yesterday and was reportedly very light hearted despite the grief he was getting from his fellow MPs. He joked about Lord Birt ('well it keeps him busy') and was then asked if it was difficult being Transport Minister. He replied that of course it was but Newcastle were top of the league so everything was okay really.

How many cabinet ministers are Newcastle fans then? Blair, presumably Milburn, Byers......any others?

-- Anonymous, January 17, 2002

As soon as Blair showed his colours the rest of the sycof sycophu sickoph arse lickers followed suit presumably.

-- Anonymous, January 17, 2002

From first hand knowledge of health teams since Ken Clarke, and second hand knowledge of the rest of the cabinet, there's very few you would recognise as fans. Mellor, I'd reluctantly have to admit, could talk a bit about Chelsea even before he discovered the joys of toes and 5 Live. The other that springs to mind is Frank Dobson. West Ham, mind, but a wicked sense of humour.

Milburn, nah. Funnily enough I spent part of the day of the Sunlun game earlier this season in his front garden, was on hot bricks he was going to make me late because he wasn't going - had been the previous season though. For most of them, it just hits the right "man of the people" note rather than being a genuine passion.

Nick Brown had a Xmas dinner in the Magpie Restaurant last year, had to move when his partner started smoking in the non-smoking bit

Byers has been trying to get a ticket off a season ticket holder friend of mine all season, to no avail. He also, I believe, has a standing invite from FS to be in the directors box. He was due to take up the offer for the Leeds game but his train was late and he missed the match. (joke)

Sounds like an interesting role you have Dr B. Do you advise the dept. of health, or give them a hard time?

-- Anonymous, January 17, 2002

Milburn actually lists football as his main leisure pursuit in Labour's web page. Byers doesn't list anything. Both of them were actually born in the Midlands. Does Byers have Geordie roots or did he become a supporter from when he was a law lecturer in Newcastle?

-- Anonymous, January 17, 2002

Government apologist Pete (for whichever lot are elected at the time).

Interesting that AM lists football as his main pursuit. His conversation on the day of the Sunlun game was limited to "Shearer is a lot slower than last season" and "when will Dyer be back?". S'pose he was distracted by the camera crews though!

Hell man - we even named the bliddy main stand after the bu99a and now you say he´s not a genuine fan! Can we rename the Broon Ale Stand? Most place have a cowshed. We could go one better with The Byers.

-- Anonymous, January 17, 2002

Or maybe we could do a consumer survey on so-called Toon fans - the Blair Which? Project...

-- Anonymous, January 17, 2002

I see that Byers is holding back permission for the new Arsenal stadium. Presumably because we ALWAYS win at Highbury.

When I was still in gainful employment I had professional dealings with both Stehpen Byers (then just a plain opposition MP) and his predecessor, Ted Garratt.

Ted was a wonderful, larger-than-life, character and old-school cunning politician - full of anecdotes, and a joy to spend time with. He clearly saw that he had an important role as an enabler, a fixer.

Byers is a very nice person, attentive, studious, and well-mannered. However, he always struck me lacking in natural political instincts, other than in ensuring he avoided personal criticism in any given situation, and perhaps not of the highest intellect - I suppose the archetypal modern politician.

Never met the guy, but Alan Milburn simply comes across as arguably the most boring man in the world!

Byers used to live in my Nana's street in Wallsend, Burn Avenue, about five doors up. Never met him like, but I know he lived there.

-- Anonymous, January 17, 2002

Maybe we could introduce a league table showing how many matches they have attended....

I wonder which Formula 1 driver Prescott follows now that Damian(sic) Hill has retired.

-- Anonymous, January 17, 2002

Byers went to Blaydon Grammar School. He joined in 4th year and I moved on in the November - never really got to know him but he seemed OK.
