Leeds matchday thread

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Unofficial Newcastle United Football Club BBS : One Thread

I'm going to abandon you all today to watch the game in the pub (The Black Horse in Barca if anyone's remotely interested).

I refuse to make predictions on football results. I'm just going to sit and suffer for 90mins and hope for 3 points but, in the bottom of my heart, expect none.

I may well be the only Toon fan in the pub today. Depending on the Leeds turnout, I may be deprived of singing my songs and / or face a kicking.... :(

Oh to be able to watch the game in a lovely partisan pub (sigh...)

Howay the lads.

Appalling Prospect

Well it's a fantastic, sunny, Spring-like day in 't Toon. A wonderful day for a full-blooded game of footy.

I'm starting to get pschyced (sp?) for the game - feeling a little nervous about our ability to match what will undoubtedy be a physical approach by the Yorkshire Racists. While Bellamy and Robert are our potential matchwinners, the contest as ever is likely to be decided by the midfield battle.

For whatever reason, we tend to be slow starters; we need come out of the traps today and pin them back intheir own half. I hope the Toon Army are really up for it today - it could make a difference.

-- Anonymous, January 12, 2002

Morning all. I too am hoping that we come out in full attack mode. We can`t afford not to with this Leeds team. We need to clip their wings in the first fifteen and show them who`s boss. (:o)

-- Anonymous, January 12, 2002

BTW, it`s grey and miserable here in the `sunny` South. And there are now 9,000,001 people with this stinking cold which is doing the rounds! Sniff, sniff! (:o(

-- Anonymous, January 12, 2002

Happy New Year Gal. I've had the same virus for about two weeks, but it won't stop me bawling 'n shooting this afternoon.

-- Anonymous, January 12, 2002

There certainly seems to be a lot of it about Clarky. I hope you enjoy the match, all the same. I`d be useless there today as I have no voice left (much to Pete`s delight)! (:o)

-- Anonymous, January 12, 2002

Good morning to you all, Canada checking in 7.50am., canny Toon like weather here today, I think I got home (they can party here too!) about 3 hours ago...my "NUFC body clock" must have woken me up.

-- Anonymous, January 12, 2002

Morning Bud - you certainly get around! Here's hoping for 3 happy points.

-- Anonymous, January 12, 2002

Well got to go, gang - there's a footy match calling. Talk to yers later.

-- Anonymous, January 12, 2002

Well once more we know the result here in Hong Kong as we are 8 hours ahead wont spoil it for the rest of you but........oway the lads.

Pity Bud as he is now in Canada wont know till tomorrow will he???

What planet am I on??

-- Anonymous, January 12, 2002

yoo hooooooooo......

Sorry for the hit and run, can't join you tonight. I have been told we are on the telly, but just come home from watching Perth Glory and was told there that it was Bolton and Chelsea.

Still I will find out in an hour.

-- Anonymous, January 12, 2002

' morning gus and Del Boy, we're definitely on the telly lads.

As clarky correctly pointed out I 'certainly get a round', what would you all like?

Derek, I'm with Maureen (sshhhhh!) and she says, "Hi, how are ya?", you know her drawl :-)

-- Anonymous, January 12, 2002

Good morning from sunny Baltimore! Webcast on and I've got a perfect XI on my team pick. The day's starting off well, let's hope it ends just as well! Just off to make myself some breakfast before ko. Toast anyone?

OBrien for Distin

Fowler OUT - family bereavement

-- Anonymous, January 12, 2002

Mums the word Bud

Ill have a malt to go yet again with my Tsing Tao.

Son with me at mo i his shirt wants to join the clan if he may been in Canada for few months, Ottawa, freezing but finds it pleasantly warm here.

On TV here and hear that Fowler is also out due to bereavement.

Sad but bonus for us??

-- Anonymous, January 12, 2002

Evening all - I've got the pics so I will give you my unbiased (ahem) punditry during the game

-- Anonymous, January 12, 2002

Sorry to hear you've also succumbed to this horrible cold, Galaxy. Help yourself to my box of tissues. A week on, and I've just about begun to breathe semi-normally again, meaning I no longer sound like Darth Vader, and am beginning to be able to taste my food.

Looking forward to the eyewitness reports from those of you with visuals! :-)

-- Anonymous, January 12, 2002

I'm stuck at work so I've no radio or speakers. I'm relying on you guys to keep me up to date again. Cheers, I'll get the pies in at half time.

-- Anonymous, January 12, 2002

Morning/afternoon all. Here we go again ;o) Howay the lads!!

-- Anonymous, January 12, 2002

First live league game for ages, the pitch looks attrocious. Duberry and Woodgate at the back for Leeds and Harte dropped to the bench.

-- Anonymous, January 12, 2002

HOWAY THE LADS! (:o)

-- Anonymous, January 12, 2002

Evening all. Just rushed home to find Bolton on the telly !!

Gus what was the Glory score??

-- Anonymous, January 12, 2002

The TV has just announced, "Sunday sees the biggest game of the PL weekend, Arsenal against Liverpool"!

Barstewards, how can 2 v.5 be bigger than 1 v.4???

:-(

-- Anonymous, January 12, 2002

Shit 1-0 Leeds, Smith

-- Anonymous, January 12, 2002

Smith scores inside 30 seconds..........

-- Anonymous, January 12, 2002

Did someone forget to tell our defenders that the whistle blowing at 3pm genereally indicates a match as begun?

-- Anonymous, January 12, 2002

Christ!! COME ON LADS, we`re the ones who should be ATTACKING!!!!! GRRRRRR!

-- Anonymous, January 12, 2002

Woodgate and Duberry, that should be interesting!

-- Anonymous, January 12, 2002

Calm down lads! Still plenty of time. Don't panic!

-- Anonymous, January 12, 2002

R U serious, just kicking off here in Canada? :-(

-- Anonymous, January 12, 2002

looks like Derke was right and you are way behind the rest of us....

-- Anonymous, January 12, 2002

I'm going out again !!

-- Anonymous, January 12, 2002

bugger bugger bugger bugger :o(

-- Anonymous, January 12, 2002

Mills just elbowed Roberyt in the face - got a a talking to but no card. Robert has a cut lip and there was no booking.

-- Anonymous, January 12, 2002

No excuses same for both teams, but pitch looks a disgrace.

-- Anonymous, January 12, 2002

Their goal btw was after 25 seconds

-- Anonymous, January 12, 2002

Argh! Bellamy just over the bar

-- Anonymous, January 12, 2002

I think the correct horticultural term is a field Derek. It's not a pitch

-- Anonymous, January 12, 2002

Sounds like we're attack well. NOw if Martyn would just...GET OUT OF THE WAY! :-)

-- Anonymous, January 12, 2002

Boy my grammar is even worse than usual today. eek

-- Anonymous, January 12, 2002

Ipswich 1 - 0 Spurs! :-)

-- Anonymous, January 12, 2002

We are having all the game so far B and D looking dangerous as per usual. Bit of luck we need.

Crowd behind them.

-- Anonymous, January 12, 2002

Bellamy just wide. sounds like it was a difficult angle, Shearer couldnt' get in fast enough to poke it into the net

-- Anonymous, January 12, 2002

We are well on top despite the score line. Duberry booked for fouling Bellamy

-- Anonymous, January 12, 2002

Shearer hit the post with a header from Solano's free kick. This is like a cup tie - all passion. Shearers having a good game.

-- Anonymous, January 12, 2002

They are kicking lumps outta us.

Shearer nearly scores from a Nobby free kick.

Ref being quite good so far must admit.

All Newcastle.

-- Anonymous, January 12, 2002

So who actually kicked Bellamy in the face? The webcast announcer kept going on about Mills kicking him, but Duberry got booked. What happened? Or can this announcer not tell the difference between Duberry and Mills?

-- Anonymous, January 12, 2002

Woodgate just bundled over Dyer and got booked

-- Anonymous, January 12, 2002

Heh! Woodgate now booked.

-- Anonymous, January 12, 2002

HOway lads! Let's get a goal and make all this possession count!

-- Anonymous, January 12, 2002

Mills cauhgt Bellamy in the shoulder after Duberry had fouled. Free kick 30 yards out - come on Robert

-- Anonymous, January 12, 2002

over by a long way

-- Anonymous, January 12, 2002

I can't remember a game with so many free kicks inside the first 30 minutes

-- Anonymous, January 12, 2002

sunderland losing 1-0

-- Anonymous, January 12, 2002

If Smith grins at me once more Im gonna slap him.

-- Anonymous, January 12, 2002

Leeds seem pretty desperate by the sound of hte webcast. Which might or might not reflect reality given the capabilities of the main announcer. ;-)

-- Anonymous, January 12, 2002

Be proactive, Derek...slap him anyway. He's surely thinking of smiling at some point in the future. ;-))

-- Anonymous, January 12, 2002

Speed missed a sitter from Bellamy's knock dow. Just miscued the shot - should have hit the target

-- Anonymous, January 12, 2002

Bellamy booked for diving - looked a penalty to me.

-- Anonymous, January 12, 2002

Actually it was't on the replay

-- Anonymous, January 12, 2002

Oh FFS, Bellamy diving!

-- Anonymous, January 12, 2002

Again Mills with the high foot! This time on Shearer

-- Anonymous, January 12, 2002

There a lot of needle now! Someone tape up Bellamy`s gob! (;o)

-- Anonymous, January 12, 2002

One (or more) of these dirty Leeds tw@ts must get sent off!

You're right Kegsy, that Speed sitter has just (now) been shown 'live' here :-(

-- Anonymous, January 12, 2002

Report from my Leeds supporting friend..the Leeds webcast announcers think the ref has 'lost it' and is being very harsh on them. ;-))

-- Anonymous, January 12, 2002

You`d think wouldn`t you Bud, but this ref is making some crap decisions too. Just our luck for him to make an example when it`s a foul by one of us!

-- Anonymous, January 12, 2002

I agree about a red card bud - but Mills should have been booked for kicking the ball away earlier on - he wasn't and I can almost guarantee he will get booked for a foul

-- Anonymous, January 12, 2002

Five Live are sticking to 28 seconds for the goal. Seems Sir Bobby wasn't even in the dugout when it went in. Someone had to tell him how it happened.

-- Anonymous, January 12, 2002

1-1 Duberry og

-- Anonymous, January 12, 2002

Leeds webcast said it was the fastest goal in the premiership this season.

-- Anonymous, January 12, 2002

...bet Sir Bobby saw that one!

-- Anonymous, January 12, 2002

YESSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

-- Anonymous, January 12, 2002

WOOOOOOOOOOOOOHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO TAKE THAT YOU DIRTY .........!!!! (:O)

-- Anonymous, January 12, 2002

Ciara the ref is havuing a good game IMHO. He ius giving a lot of free kicks BUT there have been a lot of fouls. This is defonitely a tough game to ref,

-- Anonymous, January 12, 2002

"Newcastle have got their tails up now"

Bellamy just wide. CMON!!!!!!!!! Let's get a 2nd goal!!!!

-- Anonymous, January 12, 2002

O'Brien and Batty had words a bit of a shoving match. Batty booked for the foul on O'B

-- Anonymous, January 12, 2002

Batty booked

Sorry but I always thought he was a dirty bugger

Nobby smiled and patted him on the head.

Watch with interest

HT Def deserve this if not more.

-- Anonymous, January 12, 2002

How lucky are Newcastle? Discuss.

-- Anonymous, January 12, 2002

HT 1-1. Good work, now let's kick it up a notch in the 2nd half and get all 3 points. We deserve it! :-)

-- Anonymous, January 12, 2002

LOL about Nobby!

-- Anonymous, January 12, 2002

1-1, Dingleberry o.g., sorry about the delay, can I blame the Quebecios?

:-)

-- Anonymous, January 12, 2002

H-T 1-1. A cracking first half. 70 % Newcastle 30% Leeds, we should actually be winning but surprisingly the Duberry own goal was our first attempt on target. Both Shearer and SPeed should have scored before then.

Fingers crossed for the second half - we need to get the ball out to Nobby more as he will have the grass part of the pitch to use this half and Matteo has looked decidingly dodgy against him.

I would be very surprised if this finished 1-1 and 11 on 11

-- Anonymous, January 12, 2002

I assume you all know I meant QuebecOIs?

There's gonna be a send off and a winner (penalty, you know who) for us, any takers?

-- Anonymous, January 12, 2002

Ill just nip and gey the pies and bovril

-- Anonymous, January 12, 2002

G'Day,

Just shared a bath with a portable radio as per usual.

Crap commentator seems to have practised his zeds (or zees - just to accomodate visiting Yanks), therefore "Dabidas" isn't playing this week.

However he occasionally pronounces "Leeds" as "League", reckons our equaliser as meaning "Leeds United are back in the game" and - most bizarrely of all - seemingly can't tell Mills from Duberry.

I don't mind that - it's so crap it's funny. I just wish he'd keep us informed of all the Prem goal, like Mick lowes did. I didn't know the Mackems were one down until I logged on here.

-- Anonymous, January 12, 2002

here we go, let's see if we can concentrate a bit longer this half

-- Anonymous, January 12, 2002

Bellamy clean through...should have scored.

-- Anonymous, January 12, 2002

Bellamy through for a 1 on 1 and missed - now how did you know I was going to say that?

-- Anonymous, January 12, 2002

Nigel Martyn is really annoying me. ;-)

-- Anonymous, January 12, 2002

Gonna change my e-mail address. I'm wondering if putting it on here has attracted the spam harvesters.

Just had an e-mail invitation to view pictures either Castlemaine XXXX or, more likely, gynaecological portraits.

-- Anonymous, January 12, 2002

Bell(end)ammy, AGAIN!!!

:-(

-- Anonymous, January 12, 2002

I see you're only 5 minutes behind this half Bud :-)

-- Anonymous, January 12, 2002

-- Anonymous, January 12, 2002

"Leeds are rattled". Good! Now let's get another one for safety!!

-- Anonymous, January 12, 2002

Solano just wide from a free kick

-- Anonymous, January 12, 2002

Red card for Mills!

-- Anonymous, January 12, 2002

Mills sent off

-- Anonymous, January 12, 2002

Mills off!!

-- Anonymous, January 12, 2002

He challenged Bellamy kicked the ball out and then kicked him with his other foot. What a disgrace.

-- Anonymous, January 12, 2002

Jimmy Armfield on Five Live:

"They can't afford that...they can't afford that."

20 mins to play.

-- Anonymous, January 12, 2002

The webcast is unusually unproblematic today

-- Anonymous, January 12, 2002

I don't think I have ever seen anything so idiotic ever. He had just kicked the ball out for a corner and then just kicked him. What a complete idiot

-- Anonymous, January 12, 2002

They really are a bunch of thugs.

Twas a great double save by Shay.

-- Anonymous, January 12, 2002

Lovely run by Robbie Elliot nearly scored

WOndered what messrs Verruca and Dabizas were talking about price of fish???

-- Anonymous, January 12, 2002

Robert giveth the ball away, Shay saves. *whew*

-- Anonymous, January 12, 2002

We need to get a grip of this game again. Winning 2-1 against 10 men this should be a breeze but it isn't. Take Robert off NOW - he keeps giving the ball away, made a challenge in the 18 yd box that looked close. He's on a yellow. GET HIM OFF NOW

-- Anonymous, January 12, 2002

Agree. Time to put Bernard on. Or possibly Luax2 just to run around and confuse Leeds.

-- Anonymous, January 12, 2002

How long to go?

-- Anonymous, January 12, 2002

Bernard would be a better bet to keep the shape. Lua Lua is good when you're losing - not when you are winning. Wilcox booked for arguing with the linesman

-- Anonymous, January 12, 2002

Ten mins...would like a 3rd. Lua x 2 wouldn't just confuse Leeds!

-- Anonymous, January 12, 2002

Chelsea 2 2

-- Anonymous, January 12, 2002

9 mins plus stoppage time

-- Anonymous, January 12, 2002

Hang on, lads!!!

Thanx everyone see yez at leicester

-- Anonymous, January 12, 2002

A fully merited win.

Great team spirit all round and great stuff.

Dyer, Shearer, Bellamy etc all heroes could have had more.

Depleted Leeds team but still full of good players.

Made a bet with myself that Mills would be sent off dont hoenstly think made any diff to result.

Feel really good everyone oh dear we sleep contented th neet

-- Anonymous, January 12, 2002

I am so happy right now ;-)

-- Anonymous, January 12, 2002

What a great double - and behind in both games. Bobby said there was no jinx about winning Manager of the Month. And, as usual, he was right. Fantastic. Being top is just the icing on the cake.

-- Anonymous, January 12, 2002

I head that Leeds had only lost 4 (before today) of their last 37 Premiership games... make that 5 out of 38 .... and 4 of them were us!

-- Anonymous, January 12, 2002

Agree Derek. I thought that Dyer, Shearer and Bellamy were outstanding today. Shearer caused so many problems in the first half winning fouls and yellow cards. Also thought Elliot had one of his better games, Hughes one of his poorest and Robert's distribution was on the whole dreadful and often he took the greedy option. But who cares we beat the team that (were) leaders and now we are top. TOP OF THE LEAGUE

-- Anonymous, January 12, 2002

Do you think Robert may have been overcompensating for being out? Maybe trying too hard to prove his value to us, instead of just playing his game and letting things happen?

-- Anonymous, January 12, 2002

To be honest Ciara, I thought he was just being greedy. A copule of times he blasted crosses in which hit defenders and went out or deflected to safety, when a pull back or a floater would have been the better option.

-- Anonymous, January 12, 2002

Back from pub. Met Swift there. Big Geordie / biased neutral turnout. 1 Leeds fan.

I am very happy. No complaints about ANYONE from what I saw. A wholehearted, die-for-the-toon performance from 11 heroes.

You can't ask for more than this, ladies and gentlemen.

Outstanding.
