Problem using TMPGEnc to convert avi to mpeg1

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Video CD : One Thread

Many people suggested on this board that I use TMPGEnc instead of NERO5.5 to encode. I downloaded the latest software and followed the instructions to convert an avi, however when I try and open two of my movies I get a message saying "cannot open or unsupported". I checked what format they were (ntscfilm, ntsc or pal) and selected acordingly but still get the same message. Can any body help ???

Regards.

Are you making the AVI yourself or downloading it from peer to peer services such as Morpheus? Lots of people are having problems converting stuff they download. There are all kinds of things that can cause this. The AVI you downloaded may simply be garbage because the person who made it didn't know what they were doing. You may be missing a codec that was used to make the AVI. Try opening the AVI file in Windows Media Player and see if it will play. If it won't play, my previous reasons are probably why. If it will play, then you may have an easy to fix problem. If you are converting a DivX file, sometimes people make them with 48 Khz audio and this causes lots of problems during the conversion. Try using TMPGenc to convert the video only and convert the audio using TMPGenc separately from the video or use a tool such the Azid/Lame GUI to do the audio conversion to 44 Khz MPEG-1 layer II audio.

I tried TMPEnc and also had problems - this was with my own .avi file created in Studio DV from video captured from my digital camcorder.

What is a DivX file?

-Go to Options/Environmental Settings/VFAPI plug-in

-Raise the "Direct Show Multimedia File Reader' to 1 (you can do this by right-clicking on the line and click 'Higher Priority')
