Puter ?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Beyond the Sidewalks : One Thread

I stopped in at the portal last nite.

The first problem was I wasn't able to get the whole thing on my screen so it was virtually inoperable. What to do?

Second problem: Those damned pop-ups showed up again and they won't let you just get rid of them and the x at the top right corner of the screen was just barely on the monitor. They seem to stay there till the last gasp of the puter. Is there anyway to prevent them from coming up at all, ever?

I don't know about the rest of your problems john, but as far as closing the pop-ups when the X is out of reach......go to your task bar (I think that is what it is called, the one that shows you what you have running) right click on the label of the pop-up and click close and it goes away.

I stopped in at the portal last nite.

John, by "portal" do you mean the BTS Portal at http://www20.brinkster.c om/yggdrasill/? I'm just asking so that we're on the same page and talking about the same thing in order for me to trouble-shoot the problem. :-)

The first problem was I wasn't able to get the whole thing on my screen so it was virtually inoperable. What to do?

Now that's odd. The way it was written was that it should "fit" on anyone's computer screen. Do you have a 15-inch monitor, john? I wonder if anyone else on the forum has experienced this problem?

That also is extremely odd. I've *never* experienced pop-ups while accessing the BTS Portal. Never. I *have* had problems with pop-ups at the EZ board sites (Joy's back-up forum, for instance), but never with the portal.

I'd really like to hear from others if they're experiencing similar problems to what john is going through. One thing I might be able to do for the portal not fitting is re-write the HTML code.

As for the pop-ups, what diane suggested to get rid of them after the fact is correct. If you want to try to kill them *before* they open you'll need to download some software to kill them. Webwasher is one program, there's another called Pow! that works pretty good (and it's a tiny download which is a plus). I know of a few more programs that are supposed to do the same thing as the two I listed - I'll post their URL's when I can find them in my favorites folder.

Folks, let me know if you've had similar problems with the Portal. I'd like to try to fix (at least some of) the problems if possible.

Thanks!

wow, clicked on your link Jim.......didn't even have a clue what he was talking about when he was saying "portal". Neat, I have it bookmarked now. I used all the links and never got a "pop-up" until I visited "Where the sidewalk ends" on the ez board. I have a 19" monitor and had no problem with it fitting.

I'm envious of your 19" monitor, diane. I have one at work but I'm still using my old 15" monitor at home. I have a personal portal that I created for work which has a neat javascript calendar on it. I'd like to put on the BTS Portal but it might screw up the way everything displays for folks that are using small monitors.

BTW, for folks interested, I added links to two additional forums on the portal: Irrational Exuberance and TimeBomb2000. I go to them every day for news and info and thought you all might like to know about them, too.

Also, if anyone has any particular links that they'd like to see added to the forum, let me know and I'll add them to the portal.

I uploaded the javascript calendar and put it where the Yggrdrasill tree of life image had been. It doesn't look all that great sitting there in the middle of the screen but I wanted to see if it would work on the portal. On my portal at work, I have it sitting over on the left side of the screen (where the forum buttons are located). It looks great there but I don't think it will fit well for those who use 15" monitors - that's why I didn't put it there on the BTS Portal.

After uploading the .js file, it appears to be working for me. I'd appreciate feed-back from others on if it's working for you, too.

jim, this 19" monitor is wonderful. I really went wild when I bought this computer. I bought it with money that my father left me and I bought exactly what I wanted. I surveyed everyone I knew that had a computer and asked them what they would put in their dream machine and I did it. I have never been sorry. It is the first time in my entire life that I have not just "made due" or bought the junker when I really wanted the shiny new car or truck. I have had it for two years and every day I learn something new. I had wanted a computer since they first came out with pc's.

Yup, I do have a 15" monitor and yup, the pop-ups showed up at where the sidewalks end. Next time I go there I'm gonna try the right click thing.
