Elan 7 Creative Mode vs. Auto Mode

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Canon EOS FAQ forum : One Thread

I recently purchased an Elan 7 with the Canon 50mm 1.8 lens. I have been practicing using all of the modes (creative and auto). I also have been using the 200E speedlite from my previous camera. Why is it when I am taking a picture in the auto mode the aperture and shutter speed is one thing, and when I change to the Av mode and change the aperture to the same value given in the auto mode, the shutter speed the camera calculates is much slower? I am curious what to believe. Does anyone have an explination for this? Thank you!!

That's because the two modes work differently when you have flash enabled. Have a look at:

This behavior is a feature (and a wonderful one at that!). Study page 82 of your manual, paying special attention to the contrasting behavior of P and Av modes. The explanation is brief, but to the point. The above link will fill out the details.
