Info from Keith L. about Thursday's (1/9) night O' practice

greenspun.com : LUSENET : orienteer kansas : One Thread

From the KC Adventure Racers egroup...

The location for the night O on Thursday the10th will be:

The parking lot for the Stremway trail just off Midland. You can take Midland at 435 or Shawnee Mission Pkwy. Then take Lawrence Rd. west and you will see the parking lot. (this location is just out side SMP but it's still on the SMP map.)

First start is @ 6:00, and it would be nice if we had a few "adventure racers" show up.

Thanks, Keith, for another fun event. I like running the same course as everyone else--it's fun to compare routes and times afterwards.

BTW, did you ever solve the mystery of the missing marker at #5?

Of course everyone spent different amounts of time looking for #5, but my splits were: S-1=8:39, 1-2=6:18, 2-3=9:42, 3-4=11:34, 4-5=16:49, 5-F=5:03

Keith went back to check on control #5, but it was gone. He assured me he hung it in the right place!

Keith, thanks for setting the practice up. The course was fun (some tough hills to climb).

My splits: 1=2:54, 2=5:43, 3=6:54, 4=8:54, no times for 5 and to the finish.

I bumped in to Eric, Dick and Nancy on my way to 2. They were coming down the paved bike trail heading back to 1.

I came to 2 just after Mary.

I went more-or-less straight to 3 (a bit right of the line). I think going all the way around is also good route -- it is easy running and saves climb.

I searched quite a bit for five. I attacked it from the paved trail - - trying to leave it just below the cliff. I also searched the hillside by contouring near the top of the hill, then again about half way up the hill. I even followed my compass from the field/fence corner (it's been a very long time since I followed a compass bearing to attack a control). As I was getting ready to leave the area, Dan, Mary and Eric all arrived in the area. I watched Eric search for a while. Then Dan and I jogged back.

Despite The Control Bag Theif's appearance, it was a great practice session. Thanks again.
