DiaristNet Awards: rollover

greenspun.com : LUSENET : MATH Plus One : One Thread

It's that time again.

From Diarist.net:

Nominated entries should have been written or posted between October 1 and December 31, 2001; older entries are eligible only for the "Outstanding Entry" award. Nominees for "Best New Journal" must have started after July 1, 2001. Sites that are no longer online are eligible only for the "Legacy Award" (Hall of Fame).

It's that time again.

Isn't it always?

I'm doing this because I never remember these damn things but always mean to talk about what I'm doing and who I'm looking at, and then suddenly it's the last day to nominate and I'm out of town and I fucked it up again.

I'm looking at Jay for Best New, because he just tickles the shit out of me and I really love his writing.

I'm pretty committed to what AB calls her dead daddy entry for Outstanding Entry, because I think the writing is stellar and a departure from the usual feel of her journal but still an essence of the author -- which to me defines the category, and I've always been irritated that it never garnered kudos.

Those are the only things I'm tossing about right now, but do plan to actually do the whole nominating (not-just-voting) thing this time around, after Jessie's plaintive request last time. Plus, I think Ali/Denicutie might be on the panel - and I want to help her out by getting some great stuff out there for them to consider.

I read PG's post and wondered if there would be a Dead Daddy Entry Showdown between Al and AB.

Is that supposed to be funny? Snarky? Sarcastic?

Sometimes, I do not understand what people mean when they post something.

-- Anonymous, January 10, 2002

Meaning "since both AB and Al have written really great entries about the same subject, conceivably the two entries could be up against each other in this category; and for a brief moment, that struck me as funny; and then it struck me that I am a bad person for finding it funny, since the subject in question is clearly not funny."

-- Anonymous, January 10, 2002

I don't think it's funny. I think it's the most horrible thing I've ever read on this forum.

Of course it wasn't directed toward me, so my opinion is neither here nor there.

Well . . . um . . .

That was what the "going to hell" part was about. That Sars has used every so often, most recently the piece she wrote the week after the terrorist attacks.

And there's no way to delete it, is there? Can one of the moderators delete it for me? And say that I am in agreement with PG, and that I am also a complete ass?

But y'all already knew that. Because no matter how many times I make an ass of myself on this board, I have to come back and do it again.

So, I'm sorry. I shouldn't have posted. I apologize to anyone offended.

-- Anonymous, January 10, 2002

A friend recently told me that comedy is tragedy with good timing, or something like that.

I think the idea of the Dead Daddy showdown is quite funny, and I think Al might think so. Quite honestly, the concept is ripe with possibilities.

And if Bill Lowe was anything like what Al has he was (and for the little time I knew him I think he was) he will be laughing right along with us.

-- Anonymous, January 10, 2002

To me, what was offensive was the implication that Al and AB would somehow welcome or encourage competition between their two very beautiful entries about their fathers' DEATHS. I assume both of them wrote the entries for far greater reasons than to win Diarist awards.

But this is so totally not my business. WG has already apologized and I don't want to make her feel bad.

-- Anonymous, January 10, 2002

Well. Let's just pretend that never happened. No skin of my nose, I guess, and, as I am pretty familiar with AB's nose, I'll vouch for her as well.

Now.

I haven't read enough of anybody this quarter to know who to nominate for anything. I'll have to do some catching up.

-- Anonymous, January 10, 2002

Vouch taken, Al. For the record, I wasn't offended. I even make dead daddy jokes from time to time (Okay, all the time.) But it's been a long time for me, so there you go.

Moving on. Thanks for the props, PG! I've got some nominations in mind, too, but if I don't update my journal soon, I won't be eligible to nominate anything. They'll think I'm just keeping it up as a front so I can vote. Which, if memory serves me correctly, is why I started a journal in the first place. Heh.

-- Anonymous, January 10, 2002

I haven't either. I don't know why this quarter felt like it caught me off guard since nominations are like every other week, but catch me off guard it did.

-- Anonymous, January 10, 2002

Hey guys! So, uh... what did I miss?

-- Anonymous, January 10, 2002

Naked ladies.

-- Anonymous, January 10, 2002

but if I don't update my journal soon, I won't be eligible to nominate anything. They'll think I'm just keeping it up as a front so I can vote.

I wonder if I'm eligible to vote? I was actively keeping a journal in OCtober and the first half of November, but what happens when someone goes on hiatus?

-- Anonymous, January 10, 2002

I was just kidding (I am going to update soon, I swear. No, really.), but I think I've seen this asked before, and I'm pretty sure that if you have a journal, even if it's on hiatus, you can still vote.

Backup?

-- Anonymous, January 10, 2002

Here's the backup. It's okay to vote if you're on hiatus.

-- Anonymous, January 10, 2002

Naked ladies.

Again!?!

Am I the only person who just loves random Sara postings? Always makes me go, "Aw, Sara! Love the Sara."

Right, on topic. . . AB's hitting the old lady entry? Funniest thing I remember reading all quarter.

-- Anonymous, January 11, 2002

AB hitting old lady ... loved. So funny. Like, "car wreck" funny, but, you know, funnier.

-- Anonymous, January 11, 2002

"mom you should be more CAREFUL!!" That was one funny entry.

-- Anonymous, January 11, 2002

I love getting the love. Thanks, y'all.

-- Anonymous, January 11, 2002

AB, I have the "martha stewart king, Jr" entry as one of my bookmarks because it's just that funny. ALL the time.

-- Anonymous, January 11, 2002

Just a reminder- nominations close tomorrow, January 15. Spread the love, kids!

-- Anonymous, January 14, 2002

Done and done.

Every quarter I tell myself to bookmark entries I love. Have I done it yet? No.

-- Anonymous, January 14, 2002

I'm doing the same right now. I even made a list.

Spread the love, Sara says! Do it, people!

-- Anonymous, January 14, 2002

Yay!

-- Anonymous, January 14, 2002

I finally nominated for the diarist awards. I swear it was Sara's influence.

Now Sara, tell me to get off my ass and go to the gym.

-- Anonymous, January 14, 2002

I see your bum!

-- Anonymous, January 14, 2002

Today's your last day!

Anyone brave enough to share their noms? (Especially for Best New, since I don't know of any new journals, and would like to find some.)

-- Anonymous, January 15, 2002

I hate to stir up again a thing that seems to have died, but since my post seems to have been a catalyst, I feel obligated to point out a technicality.

WG said:
"Meaning 'since both AB and Al have written really great entries about the same subject, conceivably the two entries could be up against each other in this category...' "

This is not the case. The Outstanding Entry category is the only one open to older entries, i.e. those written before the quarter in question; in fact, the DNAs specify that preference is given by the panel to older entries for that reason. Assuming that the entry of Allison's being referred above is November 12, hers would be the one you'd have nominated for Best Dramatic for this quarter.

-- Anonymous, January 16, 2002

Looks like it was a MATH shut-out. Tragedy.

-- Anonymous, March 05, 2002

Ah, well. The only one that makes me mad is AB not winning for best design. The one that won is very good, but I do love AB's design and wanted it to win.

Next time.

-- Anonymous, March 05, 2002

PG, I misunderstood. I thought the Outstanding Entry was open to all entries, including ones from this past quarter. Well, they are still both outstanding entries, regardless.

Boo! to the MATH+1 shutout. Although I have to say I'm glad Old Grey Poet has been brought to my attention.

-- Anonymous, March 05, 2002

MATH+1 shut-out! Screw!

And, my sweet Jette too. Makes me want to kick that Abbycat guy that was on the panel. I mean, he's an Austin journaller... couldn't he have pulled some strings for our people?

-- Anonymous, March 05, 2002

PG, I think that actually getting me a nomination was a long enough string for anyone to have to pull.

Damn, that makes it sound more like a tampon than an award. And here this is my first MATH+1 post. Oh well. I like the nominations better than the award selection -- it's easy for me to name journals or entries I like a lot, but I don't like rating three finalists.

-- Anonymous, March 06, 2002

Damn, that makes it sound more like a tampon than an award.

BWAA! Jette, keep posting.

-- Anonymous, March 06, 2002

Jay Elias wuz robbed. Sadness.

Well, this just goes to show that not even the Panel Chair can fix the awards. Bummer, that.
