Rabbit surprise and a ?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Country Families : One Thread

A hunter that happened to know my husband asked if he could hunt behind us, sure. I told if he got more that he needed he could bring one here, well he did. It was fielddressed. I've never skinned a rabbit so he showed me what to do, quite easy. Anyway, what can I do with the pelt?

Stretch the pelt fur side down, tacking it down with small nails or tacks. Scrape any flesh off the pelt, and rub salt heavily into it. Allow to dry. From there, you'll have to get a book out of the library to continue the preserving process. Salting the hide is as far as I've ever gotten.

I have a friend who uses any kind of pelts. When we butcher our rabbits, I call him up, he comes over and butchers for me for the pelts. If I have to do it he will trade with me. He makes tons of stuff from barnwood. Check around and see if anyone wants to swap.It would be something to check into if the hunter continues to come back!
