20-35/3-4.5 lens question

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Canon EOS FAQ forum : One Thread

I have been a happy owner of a Canon ultraconic 20-35/3-4.5 wide angle zoom lens for the last six years. Recently I've noticed that an outside barrels have some movement in an axial plane. All my other canon lenses don't have this. Just under the weight of itself the lens creates tight gap undernith and wider gap on top. So far I have not noticed anything special on pictures taken by this lens. Is this something I should be concerned about? Can it be somehow tightened inside the lens? Should I take it to a Canon service outlet? Or since I feel quite comfortable with precision mechanics should I try to get inside myself? All your responses will be greatly appreciated Paul

Most AF lenses have some play in them. If the lens is just starting to loosen up I would bring it in for a second oppinion. Even if you feel comfortable opening the lens up I would be prepared to by a new one if you do decide to open it. I would say open it only if/after the Canon service center gives an outragous estimate.

I've owned two of these and they both had some wiggle room where you're describing it. My brother's however has hardly any play in it. Anywhow, they all seem to work fine and I wouldn't worry about it unless your pictures get goofy.
