What are your pets?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Beyond the Sidewalks : One Thread

I noticed Jay B. had a chow/lab mix too, and so I got to wondering what pets we all call friends.

Ki- Black chow/lab mix very gentle dog who is quick on the defensive actions, but not aggresive (she's never bit any people-a few dogs though).

Jorden-Black cat. Good mouser. Annoying tendency to sharpen claws on furniture.

I'd like to include the really friendly animals like the tame chickens and friendly goat Molly, but I don't suppose they count as pets.

Who in the animals world do you call friend?

Maya: 8 year old tabby mix (likes to burrow under the blankets on the bed in the guest room - sleeps a lot).

Sunni: 2 year old orange tabby (loves to snuggle with Ruth and also loves to watch the birds at the feeder and chatter and trill at them).

Major Hazzard; Haz for short - German Shepard/Wolf. 3 year old big happy puppy; hell on coyotes, rubber boots, strange dogs and chickens that are stupid enough to fly over the fence.

Bentley; aka SFB (sh** for brains)- also 3 years old, a purebred Sheltie given us by the ex who swore he couldn't housebreak him. Housebroken, but refuses to stay inside as he is Haz's main partner in crime. Loves to herd children; we need to get the poor dog some sheep or cows or something.

30 million cats. Okay; at least 30. Barn cats. I spay the ones I can catch. Can't catch many. So they multiply. Feed 'em anyway. Only place we see rodents is in the shed, where the cats can't get to them. Suggested to Hubs putting a couple of cats + litter pan in shed; no dice. Some have names - Mom Cat, a calico that provides us with an interesting mix of kittens every year; Boo-Boo Kitty, a big, black neutered tom who likes to nap in cars with windows down (people keep bringing him back); Priscilla, a tortie who talks to you; Chester the Molester, the resident grey tabby intact tom; Fluffbutt, the new little yellow tabby long hair kitten; Taffy, a white and yellow female; the rest of them pretty much go by the name of Get out from under my feet dammnit I'm trying to get to the cat food. Love cats.

Bun; yep, you guessed it - the rabbit. 2 years old, a doe according to Phyllis but we don't intend to find out. Jessie's pet. Black and white. Manure producing and carrot disposal expert.

Bloo Phish - a beta. Not much personality, but Pop swears the thing is staring at him while he eats. Doesn't take much to entertain us!

Red; my pet hen. Lets me carry her around. Former star of the Henny Penny Poo Poo contest at the local fair.

Then, there's this mangy, snarly critter that sits around in my living room; and one that's a lot like him but sneakier that hides down basement - they go by John and Pop!

DH doesn't want another dog since we lost our last one, a Bichon who lived to be 16 years old. We have a very ahum....sexually frustrated parakeet, Willy, that thinks my hand is his mate. Have to get him a girlfriend. Two Oranda goldfish, one calico, one panda.

Outside: Cat, Frisbee, great mouser, squireller, bird catcher, etc. Honey, 26 year old Quarter horse; 6 goats, Lola, Rosa, Shelly, Nellie, Nikki, Vickie. (I think it's cute) A bunch of rabbits but my favorite is Pookie. She's a mushface minilop. Loves to be cuddled and will fall asleep in my arms as I pet her. Some chickens and a goldfish pond. Sometimes pigs which are fun when they are little but when they get to that 250 pound mark, I'm ready for chops.

I'd like to get another dog in the future. Maybe if we move. I have to have something that doesn't shed. Think I'll go for the poodle next time. Smart dogs.

All housecats: Stripe, Winky, Tribble, Chewbacca, Scooter, Smudge, Buffy, Minnie, Tiger & Buff Puff. All, except Buffy, are spayed females. And...yes...they all answer to their own names!! Tribble is my "weirdest" (she's a Cymric). Likes to chew on plastic and pulls the paper towels off the roll, piles them up and sleeps on them! Also have about 20 or so barn cats. Like Polly, I catch the ones I can to spay and gives rabies shots to. Going through over 25 lbs. of dry cat food a week just for them!!! Can't help but feed them, though! Someday maybe we'll get another dog, but losing the last one is still too fresh on our minds! Really want to set a BIG salt water aquarium. Anyone ever done this??

Response to What are you pets?

Well, since nothing ever gets eaten around here and nothing ever seems to move on (only gets buried), I guess that means they are pets.

6 horses -- Albert, Epona/Pony, Ostara, Gabby, Roxy, and Rhiannon, in descending order of age from 22 to 6. Joy will kibbitz that Pony is only my 'niece', but she is living here with me at the moment, so she gets counted (anything I feed carrots to every day gets counted, IMO). Registered names of Town Duster Too, DE Preshus Legacy,High Design, Early Edition, Penny Dreadful (unregistered, but show name), and Keepsake of Rhiannon. Obviously why they have barn names.

One rabbit of uncertain origin, found hopping down the highway at night in a rainstorm. Her ancestry is unknown as well, so she is known as Honey Bun, the North American Roadside Affection-Sponge.

Eight guinea pigs...Zinger and Ruby were the original two. Zinger shortly after produced Zanzibar, Calvin, and The Boys (sometimes identified as Larry, Moe and Curly), and then I adopted a neglect/abuse case little bag of bones who I named Mr. Ghandi.

An Eastern Box Turtle named Jenny, who is another rescue animal and lives in the bathroom, two African Dwarf Frogs (Puu and PuuDeux) who sometimes serenade at night (they make an odd buzzing sound).

My West Highland Terrier died at age 16 this last spring, and I am in the process of looking into another terrier, maybe a rescue one this time around so we don't have to go through puppyhood again. Not that I don't like puppies, I do -- but they are just so darn energetic!

Well, we have Theodore McBear, one-year old energetic, maniac golden. He's a lot of fun.

I have a 9 year old tabby cat, Lucy, who's a snuggler and a bit on the chubby side. We say that she is wumpy, which means lovable and lumpy. Then there's Emma, a 3 year old calico who's favorite place is the bathroom sink just waiting for drip drops.

The only bunny left is Rosie, who I think is about 5. She kisses noses and will ride around on my son's back if he is crawling around on the floor. I used to raise N. dwarfs, but not anymore. They are a little touchy to breed.

This past year we lost 3 of our buddies. Meg, another golden, Sister kitty, and Bubbaroos another N. Dwarf.

I would like to get some Jersey Wooly rabbits. I was at a rabbit show last summer, and a guy who looked exactly like Junior Samples (from HeeHaw) was sitting in a lawn chair with the most exquisite little rabbit sitting on his big belly. It was a Jersey wooly, and he was so cute. I guess that they are a cross between an angora and N. dwarfs. So, come spring I may get my rabbit cages out of the big barn and clean them up just in case I find some at a rabbit show.

Response to What are you pets?

We always say that we are the "pets" kept by all these animals to care for them. The only things we have here that are not all named are the chickens. I must admit to one chicken that is named, Emily, my little black hen given to me by a little girl friend a couple of years ago and named after her. She gave it to me for my birthday.

Sassy, my mustang who is sure she is a dog, would be the biggest. She provides daily kisses and nose blowing and talks sweet to me when I am down. Buddy, our dalamatian, rarely goes out of my sight. Katie, my calico kitty, 3 angora bunnies.......they all have about 5 names because each grandchild has named them something different; 6 nubian goats.....Dusty, Ruth, Naomi, Muffin and Megan. (Muffin was the little girl that was in the kitchen and house broke for a couple of months last winter and her partner in crime is Megan, the last gift to me from my friend Val, who died last summer) The buck is dandylion and he is a sweety also. BooCoo the jersy steer (one year old almost and still gets his bottle of milk......but we don't spoil our animals at all now do we)

Response to What are you pets?

We have so few critters now, its weird........

Anyway, there's Dukey, the cockatiel, age about 8,who has taken to biting, so isnt coming out of his cage much anymore, the little creep. I dont think he's doing it to be mean, he just seems to suddenly be interested in 'tasting' people. Someone told me to try a feed that has no sunflower seeds, cuz they sometimes make birds mean? But I havent been able to locate any as yet, although havent tried really hard. I love his company though; makes me laugh a lot with his parrotting behaviour, except in the early morning, when he thinks he has to replace our now absent roosters. Drives me nuts.

Then there's Opie, an orange tabby, 6, who has become ridiculously obese since leaving the farm. He has always refused to eat real food; makes me nuts, will only eat manufactured stuff. So he developed a furrball problem; upchucking most everyday, so we have him on that oily new food for that condition, and its made him fat and lazy. That and he wont go outside in the cold........big sissy. I'm not really a cat person per se, but this one ended up in the house cuz he almost died as a small kitten and we all stayed up nights feedin him every hour and he made it, so we got attached. Kids used to sneak him into their pockets when we went somewhere and I didnt even know he was in the car until I heard his tiny little meow. I must admit I love him.... He's a pacifist; also drives me nuts, cuz he doesn't even defend himself against .........

Sputnik the Pug....aka Sputters......who is 3,weighs about 12 pounds, constantly tries to get him to play, chews on his ears, harrasses him constantly...and he just lays there and whines. He has claws, he oughta use em a couple times, she'd learn! Anyway, Sputters is a very funny critter, is afraid of no living creature, except her own reflection which she frequently barks and growls at, but terrified of many inanimate objects, especially if it's out of its regular place. She also loves to beat up her sister........

Isis, a 4 year old Pyr, weighs about 96 pounds, and is obviously very tolerant of annoying Pugs who like to pull her voluminous hair out and chew on it! Eewww... Drives me nuts! (see how nuts I am) She is a great big sweet huggy bear, doesnt care much for veryt many men though. Its been rather difficult for her/us to adjust to the suburbs; she had 300+ acres to patrol, now she has a little yard. Seems happy enough actually (likes to spend a lot more time in the house then she used to) but I have to yell at her to stop barking all the time for fear of bothering the neighbors.

That's all folks.......

Blossom: mutt of unknown heritage. Flash: tabby cat..slightly manic Miss Kitty: Calico..fairly withdrawn with all but me usually. Freckles: Miss Kitty's sister and a tortoise shell. Very independent and looooves the woodstove. Dexter: black and silver angora rabbit Su-su or Zu-zu: white duck. My 4 year old does a lot of naming and I'm not quite sure whether he means it to start with s or z.

Um, the living cats are Katrina (fluffy all white), age 3, and Harry (Longabough, aka the Sundance Kit), age 2 (fluffy orange tabby), and the cat shades are Sarah (grey & white tabby), Molly (calico), and Hamlet (buff & white tabby). Actually, I don't think Sarah is around any more, I think she's passed over entirely now. I'm pretty sure that Katrina is still in communication with Molly and Hamlet though . . .

I have my killer hound, Blanca -- white German Shepherd weighing in at 75 lbs (so far) and probably about a year and half.

Yes, Pony is mine, but she's living with her Auntie Julie right now. How the HECK did Rhiannon get to be 6?!?! She's the baby! Pony's baby, actually. Too bad we don't have a picture to post of them, they look a lot alike. Pony is a 7/8 Arab of 18 (soon to be 19) years, and quite a sweet horse. Everyone loves her.

And then there are my birds: Mariah, African grey parrot, age 8; Lily, sun conure, 10; Snowy Blue Belle, parakeet, 10 (TEN, Julie! The incredible Timex bird!); Bijou, black-masked lovebird, 8½; and the cockatiels: Four boys, Merlin, Gwynn, Berry, and Chicory, ranging in age from 11 down to 6, and 2 girls, Pearly Everlasting and Alba, both about 9. I lost two other cockatiel girls in the last year, Tiki and Romana, and one parakeet, Cricket.

Whew! End of list! Funny story: Mariah the parrot (who talks pretty well) spied Katrina trying to sneak into the bird room the other day, and hollered "MOLLY!" She never says/said that when she saw/sees either of the boy cats. Katrina told me once, telepathically, that Molly (whom she never met) tells her things about what to do. Now, I'm sure, you think I'm a real flake. [shrug] Sorry, my animals occasionally send me telepathic messages. Usually, they resort to just hollering though. ;-)

Three indoor spayed female cats...

Kieran Komrade Kitka ("Big") is a long-haired gray. She will be 17 years old this summer and she is a crabby old lady. My theory is that she was having PMS when we got her spayed and so the attitude stuck. Back when I used to let her go outside she once held off a pack of wild dogs with just her back claws. She's not as agile as she used to be but other than a tendency to harf up hairballs at the foot of the bed in the middle of the night she's in good health. She was my ex- husband's cat before the divorce and now I am her human, she just tolerates Keith. She loves to sit in his spot on the couch and argue with him when he tells her to move.

Kira the Warrior Princess is a 5 year-old short-hair tabby. I rescued her from the side of the road after the car driving in front of me tossed her out of the window while the car was still moving. She repaid me by falling madly in love with Keith and now she is a total Daddy's girl. Her favorite spot to sleep at night is snuggled against Keith's neck burrowed under his hair. She is very vocal and intelligent, I'm sure she's talking to us but we're just a little too dense to pick it up.

Morwen ("Wenna" or "silly puff") is a 5 year-old long-haired tortie, her tail is almost bigger around than her body. Her mission in life is to make sure that my lap is warm no matter what I am doing. She is a fiber addict; she loves to carry my knitting throughout the house and has been known to pry the lid off of a copy-paper box to get to a skein of kitchen cotton. The love of her life is "Sleeve", a sleeve from a ren faire blouse sewing project that she stole and refuses to give back. She also is an energy slut, if I'm meditating or doing any sort of energy work she has to be right in the middle of it.

Caledonia ("Baby") is a long-haired calico with beautiful emerald eyes. She will be 7 years old this summer if she is still alive. Stolen from the fenced back patio of my apartment 5 years ago. Gone but never forgotten.

Psychic communication with animals?

Why sure. The trouble is, what they usually have to say is "Where's the carrots?" and "Brush ME".

I learned early on that my animals had their own name for me -- 'Big Feeder Lady'. (altho the horses have a different name for me, which is "Little-Mean With Carrots-Growing-In-Pockets")

Well, it beats their OTHER name for me -- "You with the Thumbs"
