vulcanite repair

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Leica Photography : One Thread

I just got a Elmar 90mm f4 which has a ring of vulcanite around its base, otherwise the lens is chrome. Two pieces of the vulcanite broke off but fit back on the lens snugly, What type of glue should I use to secure? The underbarrel appears to be milled brass. Thanks, Bob Haight

Cyanoacrylate (Crazy-glue, Super-glue) will work fine...a *tiny* drop! Another possibility is to strip off the vulcanite and replace it with a strip of comparably-textured leatherette, using Pliobond (rubber cement).

Pliobond or contact cement will work fine. I usually use epoxy. If you mix epoxy with cigarette ashes to form a dark grey almost black paste you can fill in and texture missing areas of vulcanite. I use a jewelers screwdriver to model the texture after it sets up a bit. A bit of spit on the screwdriver prevents the epoxy from sticking to it.

Could someone please explain what "Pliobond" is. I see the name pop up often and I presume it is a american product/brand name. What would be a more generic description of the product and its properties (so I can find a substitute). Eg. is it the flexible type of contact glue you apply to two surfaces, let dry and press together or...?
