Two Dead, Seven Wounded in Apartment Shooting in Lima, Ohio; Police Mum on Possible Motive

The Associated Press Published: Jan 4, 2002

LIMA, Ohio (AP) - Gunmen burst into an apartment and opened fire, killing two people and wounding seven others, police said. Police Sgt. Glen Crawford said early Friday that the names of the dead and wounded were being withheld until relatives were notified.

Crawford said several gunmen were involved in the Thursday night serving. He wouldn't comment on a possible motive.

The wounded were taken to Lima Memorial Hospital and St. Rita's Medical Center. No information was available on their conditions. Nursing supervisors at both hospitals referred questions to police.

Yep. That doesn't surprise me. I used to work in Lima, and when there was the first drive-by shooting near my house, I gave my landlord 30 days notice and moved to a tiny town called Ada, 15 miles east. That neighborhood has since become a haven for dope dealing and related activities.

Barefoot, it wouldn't surprise me. I'll go out on a limb. Thirty years ago (or so), Lima (aka Lost in Middle America) was a thriving factory town, with General Dynamics, the tank plant, Three oil refineries, and other light manufacturing. The last recession tore the heart out of the town, throwing something like 13,000 out of work. I mean, it was like Flint, Michigan as depicted in Michael Moore's film, "Roger and Me."

When I lived there, it was coming back a little, but it was full of unemployed people and rowdy youths with lots of energy and not enough constructive activities to put it into -- that is, gangs, drug- dealing, chop shops, fake id, fencing operations . . . all those activities were in full swing and areas that were "ok" got worse as the old people died off and unemployed relatives inherited their homes. Some Ohioans joke that Lima is the dumping ground for those too poor to make it in Cleveland. There are three large prisons in the area.

Okay. Onward. Gotta shop, but not 'till I drop. (;

I didn't mean gangs were constructive activities. Youths joined them because of the lack of sports programs, church programs, and other places where they could be and not cause trouble. I think the divorce rate was 8 in 10 couples. Men moved to Columbus. Single women stayed in Lima. . . .
