Bassedas, canny lad

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Unofficial Newcastle United Football Club BBS : One Thread

Intersting little story. a guy i know said he got talking to Bassedas whilst waiting in a queue. (a toon player prepared to wait in a queue?)They talked for half an hour after they had queued about football, Newcastle and the rest. He was apparently first rate. The nub of his problem was that he broke his foot soon after coming to us and has never felt the same flexibility and strength he had before. He also reckons that he wants to settle down in Newcastle and his children to grow up as geordies and that Freddie Shepherd is a top guy behind the scenes and has really looked after him.

So what's he looking for? A job in the club shop?? He might be a canny lad, but if he isn't up to playing first team footy then he'll have to look for something else. A real shame mind. He could have been good.

There's a nice article in todays Journal on Badedas - what a great blerk he is, learned the patter, loves the Toon, wants his kids to become Geordies, etc.

He says he is definitely not intending to stay on Spain, and has every intention of completing his contract at SJP. He views a promise of 1st team footy at Tenrife as part of his plan to prepare and get himself fully match fit for the Toon's 2002-3 season.

If that is his game plan I really admire the guy for his fortitude and committment - and while I have my doubts, frankly I wish him well and really hope it comes off for him. This guy does not seem to be your regulation Johnny Mercenary.

It's great to read what an effect the NE has on so many players. Just today we've read some nice things said by Saha about TGC and now this from Bassedas. Hughie Gallagher came back to end his days here. Supermac, despite not being a Geordie so with no natural affiliation for the place, also came back. So many players have nice things to say about the place (including Ginola, surprisingly, in his autobiog). I think there can be few places more passionate about the game and this has an effect on lots of players.

Ken, with respect, being a nice lad and being the right player to help us win things aren't the same thing. Like any player who signs for us, I want them to be the greatest in the game. But I think Chrissy boy has had plenty of time to get over his bust foot and pressure for a 1st team place.

Naturally, when he goes to Tenerife he'll be a huge success making us look like proper dumplings...'tis the way of the B&W world :-)

I dont think he has , hes not had a sustained run in the team and also hasnt played much for the stiffs.

He hasn't had a big run in the first team but we can't afford to give him one at the current time. Maybe if we capitulate and drop to 11th but are safe from relegation then we could try him, but hopefully we won't get to that position.

I bet he does really well in Spain (the same goes for Italy) - it is suited to his style and approach to the game - he'd have more time on the ball to pick out the pass.

I still reckon he's good enough - he picks good passes that the rest haven't managed to read yet. Now Little Kevin is back he may have a soul mate.

Lets give him time @ Tennerife

I really do hope the stint in Tenerife is good for him. He has shown glimpses of what he can do, but was unfortunate with his injury and also to never get a decent run in his preferred position. He seems to have an excellent attitude and I will be thrilled to bits if he can rediscover his form for us.

There is an interview with Bernard in teh Scene @ St James' where he said he was reluctant to go to Darlington at first, felt it was beneath him, but came back a different player and realized it was just what he needed. Here's to hoping for the same from Bassedas. :-)

came back a different player and realized it was just what he needed.

Maybe the training regime/facilities were better ... :-)

If we sent Marcellino to Darlington will he come back a different player? Why hasn't this been tried yet?

Agreed jonno, he needs some hands on experience.

;7)

Thing on Teamtalk reckons FS wants to take legal action against Marcelino and sack him, but the PFA don't like this.

Complete bollocks if you ask me.

By bollocks I mean I don't think it's true, although it's a good idea

Don't send Marcia to Darlington just yet! It would be our luck he'd turn around and put us out of the FAC. ;-)
