Literary device as opposed to poetic devices like alliteration and rhythm as of a horse galloping? Uses a story set in a vague time and setting and an unnamed knight. The symbolism of Shadow and shade is used a few times. As the old man feels the shadow growing(himself becoming a shade)he meets a "pilgrim shade", another lost soul? He must go to the Valley of the Shadow(shadow of Death). The promise the ending is of course- shadowy. As in other Poe works the poem begins with rich sensory sound and ends in silent, reduced vision. The movement from youth to old age matches the movement of hope to horror and despair.

And the story itself as a lifelong quest is a symbol of life itself and the unknown fulfillment beyond death that may or may not be Eldorado. Simple ballad, repetition of sound and action, repetition of the ending thme of shadow to build a darkening mood.
