Goose laying should I let her set?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

My young African goose has 11 eggs in her nest, will she set on them or won't she, if she does should I let her. Our high recently has been around 9 or 10 degrees(F)here in Northern Minnesota . Any input would be appreciated.

I just asked the same question this morning on the Poultry Connection. The advice I was given was no, but I live in Southern Cal, not Minn, so I would really think the answer for you would be no, unless you can keep her in a warm environment, and are prepared to take care of the gosslings, if she can't keep them warm enough.

I think the main issue is whether or not you can keep them warm enough. This means during and after hatching. Most people wait until spring when the weather warms up. It is totally up to you and what kind of protection you have available for them. Some people have been known to raise chickens, ducks and geese in the strangest places! (bath tubs, basements, spare rooms) Good luck!

Strange my young African goose just laid 3 eggs for the first time too. Was looking for an answer to "should I let her sit or not". Looks like I got my answer thanks.
