M3 and black 50mm summicron

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Leica Photography : One Thread

I recently purchased an M3 at a photo flea market in Montreal. It had a black 50mm summicron. I paid $1700 Canadian. That's about 50% less in US currency. Later I was told that it is highly collectable with the original chrome lens. Does the black lens make a difference as a collectable. As is it takes great photos and I'm pleased with the quality. Thanks

So, it would be the equivalent of $850 U.S. currency. You might expect to pay that much, more or less, for a nice M3 with no lens at all. If the camera and lens are in good condition, you got a bargain. At that price, I would shoot with it and forget about the collector value.

But if you want, post the serial #'s of camera and lens, and we'll tell you what we can.

Nice Going!

Actually, $1700 CAN is about $1070 US. Taking US$ and adding 50-60% will get you aporx CAN ammounts. But taking CAN$ and subtracting 50- 60% won't get you close at all.

Hundreds of thousands of M3s were made. It's value as collector's item depends very much on the camera's condition.

If the camera is in outstanding condition, it's highly collectible. If it and the lens are in good working condition with good (but not great) cosmetic condition, you got an excellent deal. If both are rather worn and need a CLA to work smoothly and reliably, you got a decent deal.

Yep. Josh is right on the...uh...money. you divide the CAN amount by 1.5 or 1.6 to get the approx. USD equivalent.

The Montreal area usually hosts about three Photo Flea Markets per year. The Pointe Claire Holiday Inn show is the busiest. Another show is hosted by the Quebec Assn. of Professional Photographers in the spring. This event is great because you can get studio closing and retirement equipment and over stocks. All the markets have Leica and Hassy dealers and collectors from throughout east coast including the USA. However since Sept. 11 there have been fewer American dealers and buyers. So say veteran dealer-collectors who've been active for 20 plus years. I tried my luck at the market by reserving a table and tried to unload my 15 yearl old Bessler 23C and Omega D2 enlargers. No such luck but I did trade a much loved Arca Swiss 4X5 for a 35mm Summicron. It was a sacrifice but I still feel good about the deal everytime I look at the razor sharp images I print up. BTW ..I'll post the next Photo Flea Market's announced in Montreal for everone. I'm sure Shutter Bug Magazine lists them as well. Thanks all.
