grape tomatoes?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

I've been seeing in grocery stores a new, to me, tomato called Grape Tomatoes. I've checked several seed companies and I have yet to find anything close to them. I have bought them from the grocery stores and they are small about nickle sized, pear shaped, very sweet and quite delicious. The package called them "grape tomatoes." Would anyone have a seed company where they think they might be found or where I might look for them? Or what their scientific name might be. Or even a website that lists new tomato varieties? Thanks for the help.

I got potted plant starts for these last year from WalMart of all places. Heavy bearers! I don't know where to point you to for seed though, sorry.

Ok I just looked thru my "Totally Tomatoes " catolog , and the only grape tomatoe listed was a "green grape" used to make greem ketsup, as it stays green when ripe. But they have "LOTS" of maters and they have a web site: www.totallytomato.com Check them out! Thru them you can also get a pepper catolog, and a great source for heirloom seeds is R.H. Shumway. Hopes this helps. ddt

Hi Linda, I found the following address by putting in a google search but they seem outrageous in price to me. $15 for a pack of 100.

Linda, I grew some a couple years ago and I believe they were Burpee seeds. K-mart carries Burpee seeds and I think I picked them up there. Burpee's have a web site, so ya might check it out.

How about just drying and saving some of the ones that you are buying?

Linda,

Here are a couple more (although they aren't "grape" tomatoes per se, they *are* very tiny for cherry tomatoes):

Wild Cherry [1/2" diameter cherry tomatoes] (Tomato Growers Supply Co.) $1.95 for a pkt. of seeds.

Yellow Currant [grape-like clusters of 1/3" yellow cherry tomatoes] (Tomato Growers Supply Co.) $1.90 for a pkt. of seeds.

Santa F1 [the fruits are unique; the closest description being elongated grapes] (Thompson & Morgan) $3.49 for a pkt. of 10 seeds.

Grape Tomato Santa Fe [can bear more than 500 fruits per plant. Elongated, oblong-shaped fruit about 1 inch x.75 inches] (New England Seed Company) $3.99 for a pkt. of 10 seeds.

Johnny's Selected Seeds has a grape tomato called "Sweet Olive" in this year's catalogue. They have a website, as well.

Look at Baker Creek Seeds. They have a Webb site. They have just about any tomato you might want. Terry

I have a friend that took the seeds from the store grape toms and had about 100% germination. Take the seeds and let them fermint a little. Wash them off and dry them.

Linda,

Tomato Growers 2002 catalog has grape tomato seeds #6721 at 20 seeds for $2.25. Nichols Garden Nursery 2002 catalog has three grape tomatoes; green grape 30 seeds for $1.45, honey bunch grape 20 seeds for $2.95 or 100 seeds for $12.95 and santa lucia grape 20 seeds for $2.95 or 100 seeds for $12.95. I'm guessing that these are take offs of the santa hybrid of a few years ago, which I loved and can no longer find. Heard that it was all bought up and taken off the market. Kept some seeds from my original santa hybrid but as it was hybrid, the plants have been less uniform than the original. I like Nichols Garden Nursery, nicholsgardennursery.com, cause they have a couple of pages of new and unusual vegetables listed each year, not to mention the quality of the products that I have gotten from them. Thank you to all who responded. I planted my saved seed today and I'll see what comes up.
