As long as the mpg files are in the correct format, you should be able to get them to play. It may take some experimenting to get the combination right (file format, burning software, etc)

"yes my dvd player does support VCD" doesn't mean it will play CDR/CDRW. Check out the manual and see if it supports CDR/CDRW, then you can burn away :)
