"All the News That's Fit to Print" and Mook!

Mark "Mook" Everett made today's New York Times!

Under the headline, "A Year of Champions -- The Fastest, the Strongest, the Best," we find none other than OK's own Mook.

Mook is recognized as the men's US Champion in long distance and short distance orienteering. Cool.

Mary is looking at the NY Times right now and Mary just pointed out that they've listed Mikell Platt as the classic champion. But, if my memory serves me correclty, Brian May actually won the title. If I understand correclty, Brian is eligible (must be some sort of dual citizenship?). At the US Individual Champs, Brian was about 3 minutes ahead of Swampfox.

Am I correct or is the NY Times correct?

You're correct. Brian is a citizen of both the USA and Canada, and has been living in Minnesota for a while.

Messed up or not, it was still nice to see orienteering listed in the Times, even though the list of "sports" has grown since I last saw it several years ago. Among the sports are bathtub racing, elephant polo, and marbles, just to name a few. Full list is at:

http://www.nytimes.com/2001/12/29/sports/othersports/ 2001CHAMPS.html?pagewanted=1

It may require (free) registration.
