Actually, he did live there for about thirteen months after being assigned to Fort Moultrie during his stay in the United States Army. I believed he reached the rank of Sargent Major(artillery?). He is said to have spent some time actually exploring Sullivan's Island near Charleston, the setting of his treasure tale, "The Gold Bug".
