Lateral give in 28-135 IS lens barrel?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Canon EOS FAQ forum : One Thread

Just got a 28-135 IS. I notice that there is some lateral give in the lens barrel. (particularily when extended/zoomed) Is this normal? (Is it connected to the IS glass adjustments?) Or could it lead to performance trouble ahead?

This is normal. It has nothing to do with IS glass adjustment. The IS floating diaphram is located well within the lens. After overa year of use and abuse, this lateral movement has not lead to any apparent performance trouble on my 28-135 IS.

If Canon ever came out with a 28-70/2.8L IS, 28-105/2.8L IS or 28- 135/2.8L IS with a stout metal barrel and non-telescoping zoom action like almost all the other L-series zooms, I would be the first in line for it.

Any Canon autofocus SLR body is compatible with any Canon EF-mount lens. The nice thing about the Canon system is universal compatibility of all functions throughout the system.
